Personalization Disable "Show more options" context menu in Windows 11

  • Staff
Show_more_options_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable having to click on "Show more options" to see the full context menu for your account or all users in Windows 11.

When you right click on an item in Windows 11, you will see a new modern condensed context menu with Show more options (Shift+F10) at the bottom you have to click on to see all available options.

Reference:

If you use the context menu a lot, then you will most likely find having to click on Show more options annoying anytime you need more options.

Pressing the Shift + F10 keys while having something selected will open the "Show more options" context menu for that item.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22572, you can now also press Shift + right click in File Explorer and the Desktop to be the same as click/tap on the “Show more options” context menu item.

Starting with Windows 11 build 26058 (Canary and Dev), to make it easier to use the File Explorer context menu, labels have been added to previously unlabeled actions such as cut, copy, paste, rename, share, and delete.

If you like, you can disable this condensed Show more options context menu to always have it open too see the full context menu again when you right click on an item.

I just tested option three on my system to see if anything may have changed, but it still works as outlined in the tutorial.

Usually that error is for a permissions issue. Double check the owner and permissions of the key to make sure it's correct, and merge the REG file from your desktop to make sure there's no permissions issue for it.
I appreciate your help. The one for Users worked fine, but the one for All Users was a no-go. More than likely "user error", but I am usually pretty good at following tutorials with pictures and all. 😁

Sorry, but now that I've unsuccessfully messed with that registry key, is there anything I should change back to default for security's sake or anything like that?

No need since it's just a menu item. The permissions will most likely get reset after the next feature update anyways.

I have been loving this fix, since the new context menus are so frustrating, but I just ran into an issue. I have been trying out Windows Spotlight for the desktop backgrounds and am actually liking it. One side effect of this context menu fix is that it breaks the functionality of the "Learn about this picture" icon that's placed on the desktop by Spotlight. You can left click it to launch the browser link, but if you right-click, the context menu options to "switch to next picture", "I like this picture", and "Not a fan of this picture" are all missing. Only "Open" remains.

I tested undoing the context menu fix and it does fix the spotlight icon context menu, but that cost is too high (going back to the Windows 11 context menus everywhere else).

Anyone else experiencing this, and have you found a workaround? I'd be happy with just creating a shortcut to the "switch to next picture" command, but I've been unable to interpret the shell structure of the spotlight icon in the registry. It's at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2cc5ca98-6485-489a-920e-b3e88a6ccce3}.

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come, where more and more things will be broken with the old context menus.

Hello Gregory, :alien:

Double check option three to make all the steps have been done correctly and fully to see if a mistake may have been made.

The REG file will not successfully merge if steps 1-4 were not done correctly for the "Administrators" group.

I am back to Windows 10, and OMG. None of this right click nonsense is there. Right clicking is mostly instantaneous but on some apps or shortcuts it is. I found Chrome shortcuts do have a wee bit of lag. It' s no wonder W11 adoption rate is so low. Let's see how MS basterdizes Windows 12 later this year.

Sammy: from the problems I have been having lately, and 3 x reinstallations; win11 appears to be trying to take over my life. Its a good solid platform but at least 50% of it is useless and needs revising. And there is tons of stuff I want to or have erased. I also hate Edge and Bing and as soon as I had reinstalled my two fav browsers, I go to permissions and change them all from edge to chrome or firefox, which ever is fav. I wont change back to Win 10 mainly because the support/updates ends soon.

@elbmek, I understand your perspective. While W11 has some appealing features, I can't say it's a fully solid and stable platform compared to W10. Its performance in terms of speed and navigation doesn't match the smoothness of W10. I share your sentiments completely regarding Bing and Edge.

Reverting to W10 from W11 felt like the right move for me. Although Microsoft has officially ceased feature updates for W10 and promises security support for about a year, their actions contradict this stance. They continue to introduce new features to W10, and the adoption rate for W11 isn't as high as anticipated.

Personally, I stuck with W7 for an extended period after its official support ended, and I anticipate W10 will enjoy similar longevity. The similarities between W11 and W8/W8.1 seem apparent, prompting Microsoft to rethink their refresh cycle and plan for the launch of W12 in the upcoming fall.
