Looking into adding a fan to either my Lenovo 920S or my Lenovo 910S or both. These are SFF cases, so there's little room for much of anything. I've found a fan-mounting spot in each case, but the space will only accommodate a 40mm fan. I've found a good quality one:

Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX, Premium Quiet Fan, 3-Pin (40x10mm, Brown)

Not expensive, but the question is, can anyone here who's had experience with tiny fans tell me whether a 40mm fan is going to make any difference at all?

(This question arose in conjunction with my installing of a new M.2 PCIe with a heat sink, and I reported that the only fans in the case were the one in the PSU and the one on the CPU. No case fans at all. Yet both machines run cool all the time.)

ANY fan can make a difference. Be wary of the noise from small fans though.
Once you go below 120MM noise starts to be a serious concern.

As with all fans... it's the cfm that tells you if it'll be useful, and the dBa, tells if it will drive you crazy.

That Noctua fan only pushes 4.83 cfm (8.2 cmh)
A typical 120mm case fan moves about 60-70 cfm.

Hi folks.

What's the purpose of a Fan -- presumably to cool what it's blowing a volume of air to the bit of kit (or even the open space) that needs to be cooled. So the smaller the fan the smaller the volume of air available for this purpose. Now you can sort of get this effect minimized by having a small fan blowing into some sort of "holding container" but then you still need to cool x cm / mm volume of area.

I really feel sad when people have to ask these sorts of questions in 2023 -- these are all simply basic physics questions -- you don't need a Science degree to "get this" -- An easy comparison is trying to cool a large (military cookhouse size) saucepan with a small (even if high pressure) hose of cold water with say a 1mm nossle.

Please nobody here take offence -- but today's education to me seems lacking in " Science Basics" and where "Asset stripping" and wheeling and dealing in financial markets seems to be a high priority.

Anyway which everyway you cut it -- Laws of thermodynamics require that if the thing you want to cool or heat needs X amounts of "Energy" in whatever units you want to use the suppling system has to be able to provide it or be able to extract it from the object in the case of cooling.

Cheers
jimbo

That cfm value is wrong??
118 cfm from a 40mm fan, would be like... 130 dBa (jet engine 2 feet away type noise).

4.82 cfm is about the air movement of a fly breathing quietly.
It might make a good f*rt fan in a really tiny room, but it's not gonna cool anything.

Fans 101...

Probably the best tiny fans that move LOTS of air are DELTA fans, but they ARE noisy.
I just checked. Even the 40mm DELTA fans are wimpy. Only 11.5 cfm :(

Actually, I'm not sure I've ever been close enough to a fly to hear it breathing, quietly or otherwise. :D

To me a cubic meter is a box of any size that measures something.

"Metre is the standard spelling of the metric unit for length in nearly all English-speaking nations except the United States and the Philippines which use meter."

A cubic meter is an area that's 1 meter by 1 meter by 1 meter.
Same for a cubic foot... 1 ft x 1 ft x 1ft area.

Here's a converter for those pesky Euro types. :-)

Might be time for some "Dremel" adjustments. ^^

40mm DELTA (not quiet)

Newegg navigation to the rescue... make sure to check the dBa
Corsair AIO 120mm radiator fans are approx. 37 dBa., which everyone seems to hate.
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 36 dBa

The Hyper 212 EVO (push/pull) doesn't bother me, but it's about the same noise as a big A/C unit.

Most people are OK with fans that are less than 25 dBa. Less than 20 dBa is even more well liked.

Definitely NOT a 40mm fan...

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I build PCs, including a SFF one, and I ended up ditching the mini-fans for exhaust as they don't move a ton of air and can actually choke the vent a bit if you don't have them running faster, especially if your cpu heatsink fan is pushing more air than it can handle (higher RPM=more noise, even on good quality Noctua and Be-Quiet fans). Why specifically do you want one? What are the specs of that build? I wouldn't worry about getting a larger aftermarket heatsink for your NVME SSD unless you're frequently maxing out the read and write speeds over extended periods of time. Have you used something like CPUID to monitor your temps? If you are having thermal issues I recommend repasting the CPU and and or watching a how-to video on undervolting. I'd recommend a heatsink replacement, but the one in there looks proprietary, unless it's just a stock cooler with a proprietary fan mount. If it runs cool I wouldn't recommend adding a mini fan--it will just add more noise and without an intake for positive airflow, the cooling will be minimal. Just repaste the CPU every 2-3 years and clean out any dust that accumulates.

Thanks, @Ghot, for the help. I think I'll just cancel the order. I've never been concerned about heat with these three Lenovo machines (the wife has one, and I have two in my office, all 900-series SFF desktops). I only started thinking about it when everybody started telling me how HOT I should expect my new NVMe to run.

So far, it hasn't passed 35 degrees C. But that's with a pretty good heat sink on it.

35C is nothing really. I wouldn't worry about it till you're over 75C.

Most people are OK with fans that are less than 25 dBa. Less than 20 dBa is even more well liked.
I can not stand the noise, I have closed headphones, yet I have all fans limited to 700rpm, anything over 1000 would kill me.

The "bearings" also help a lot with the noise, and they raise the cost of the fans.
Good fan bearings aren't cheap.

35c is just a normal idle temp. How high does it go up to when tasks are open?

@Fiveish
Welcome to the forum.
Thanks for taking the time to write up your thoughts.
Why specifically do you want one?
I don't, actually. I just thought I'd fly the idea by my friends here and see what they thought.
I wouldn't worry about getting a larger aftermarket heatsink for your NVME SSD unless you're frequently maxing out the read and write speeds over extended periods of time.
Not looking for another. One came with the NVMe, and I decided to use it. The disk runs quite cool with it.
Have you used something like CPUID to monitor your temps?
Yep. A dozen times in the first few days after I installed the disk. All good.
If it runs cool I wouldn't recommend adding a mini fan--it will just add more noise and without an intake for positive airflow, the cooling will be minimal.
That's what I concluded from this thread's contributors. I've cancelled the order. Thanks.

So far, 35 is the highest I've seen. I edit books. I never play games or edit videos or complex graphics or anything along that line, so now that I've seen the new disk's baseline (with the heat sink), I'm not worried about it getting much hotter.

Don't bother with this fan.
"Quiet" is relative.
It is too small for a PC. It may be quiet for NAS or 3D printer because those hardware have their own noise level. But it will not be quiet enough for a PC. To make it help in air circulation or cooling process, you will have to ramp up the fan speed and that's when noise problem will arise.

So far, 35 is the highest I've seen. I edit books. I never play games or edit videos or complex graphics or anything along that line, so now that I've seen the new disk's baseline (with the heat sink), I'm not worried about it getting much hotter.
If you are not gaming, you don't have to worry about "heat" on your PC.
