Does SATA III to USB 3.0 cable slow down a SSD significantly?

I purchased a SiliconPower A55 internal SSD and using it with a SATA III to USB 3.0 adaptor cable to connect to my laptop's USB 3.0 port.

Crystal DiskMark test shows very low read/ write speeds.

Is this a problem because of the cable?

If I connect my Samsung T5 or T7, they have very good speeds of over 400 MBPS.

I tried copying a large Windows image file of size 12 GB and the copy window shows a speed of about 111 MBPS. This is still very low compared to the claimed speed of 500 MBPS.

Is the Silicon Power SSD faulty or is it being severely limited by the cable?

Does it connect to the USB 3.1 jack?

The SSD speed is reduced by the USB connection. I have used several of that brand and have no issues internally.

My USB ports are all 3.0.

Can the speed indeed be reduced by that much because of the cable?

I wanted to buy a small capacity SSD. Since I already had this SATA to USB cable, I opted for an internal SSD since all external SSD were only available in 500 GB or more sizes.

But the speeds are just too low. I still have time to return it if this is a faulty SSD. But I want to confirm that first because it could also be because of the cable.

I've never had high speeds on external drives. Simply the USB thumb drives which I use daily (I use San Disk Extreme Pro, rather fast on paper) in real use show relatively slow speeds (I never bother with benchmarks). Partially this can be attributed to the antivirus, partially to the way Windows is treating USB drives.

Moreover, USB 3 ports are now labeled strangely - the 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 ports are now 3.2 Gen 1, 3.2 Gen 2, and 3.2 Gen 2x2. The actual speed can be affected by the controller, etc. If you think cable is at fault - you can always change the cable, but as far as I know "digital" cables either work or they don't.

Take a look at this:

Hi there

@TheMystic

on the whole not as far as a user would actually notice it -- even running Windows on physical "Virtual Drives" - note NOT VM's - and booting / running entirely from external devices response is perfectly OK.

Copying the odd file or two it might be a tad slower but I'm sure most people aren't regularly copying 40 GB or bigger files around. !!

Running via a "Multi Hub" port might slow them down but so far I think provided there's enough power (and SSD's consume very little) they should be fine. I wouldn't share them on a Multi-port USB hub if you have "standard" external HDD's connedted as well --especially those self powered "passport" type HDD's - unless the hub is powered.

Speed also can be limited by the I/O bus on the mobo - so it's not always the fault of the SATA->USB connector. Some USB systems are better than others -- depends on quality of MOBO.

Don't bother with any 3rd party A/V either these days --certainly not on W11 --WD is about as good as it gets for HOME computers -- not corporates or other types of large LANS -- assuming here just on domestic computers.

Cheers

Can't say I agree with that, although what I really care about is not the antivirus but rather the firewall. The third-party firewall (I use ESET myself) allows me to control which programs on my computer access the internet in real time. I don't think WD gives me enough capabilities in that respect.

As I said before, I am not very impressed by benchmarks. My typical copying task involves copying a bunch of folders between an internal SSD and an external USB thumb drive. If the overall size is few GBs and the number of files is in tens of thousands, then this can take a while. Windows provides some animation to demonstrate the speed and this fluctuates all the time from next to zero to fairly fast, but never as fast as the benchmarks show, which is why I am not impressed by benchmarks.

Agree with Barman58.

With that I'm curious as to what cable the OP is using? And as Barman points out cable type (USB 2.0 vs. 3.0) can also affect speeds.

I'm just using Windows Defender. And connecting directly to the USB 3.0 port without using a hub.

I don't have another cable or another SATA SSD to test. So I want to know if the speeds can be severely limited by the cable.

Given the speed numbers in OP, something is definitely not right. Either the SSD or the cable isn't supporting the required speeds. Using the same ports, I get expected speeds of over 400 MBPS on both my Samsung T5 & T7 Touch. So the port or the connection to the motherboard isn't a problem.

Is there any other way to test the SSD? I wanted to buy an SSD for its speed, but don't want an HDD in the name of SSD. This particular SSD shows up as HDD in Windows Disk Defragmentation. That is another problem.

If I copy a file from one partition to another on the same disk, will it still involve the cable?

Can this method be used to test the actual speed of the SSD?

Not all cables advertised as USB3 are, depends on where you get them from, there are dodgy suppliers out there USB3 has extra wires to USB2, fakes mainly from Ebay often look correct with the blue insert but don't have the extra wires in the cable.

You could test the drive by connecting it as an internal drive in the PC, assuming it's not a laptop and you have a spare SATA cable, most PCs will have sufficient power connectors.
