Hi everyone,

I see that a lot of people make the mistake of enabling Intel Rapid Storage Technology in their BIOS when they don't need RAID, I think a little reminder is in order :

Before or since Intel 6xx series chipsets : Intel Rapid Storage Technology enabled in your BIOS = RAID mode (whatether a RAID is actually needed/created or not). So if you don't plan to do a RAID, do not enable Intel Rapid Storage Technology in your BIOS.

Since Intel 6xx series chipsets : SATA Controller and/or PCIe SSDs mapped under VMD in your BIOS = Intel Rapid Storage Technology automatically enabled in your BIOS = RAID mode (whatether a RAID is actually needed/created or not). So if you don't plan to do a RAID, do not map SATA Controller and/or PCIe SSDs under VMD in your BIOS.

Also, I repost this from my other thread which will allow you to see more clearly as to the drivers used depending on the case :

Hi everyone,

As reminder, there are certain things to know since Intel 6xx series chipsets.

Before Intel 6xx series chipsets :

- SATA HDDs/SSDs in AHCI mode use Intel SATA AHCI Driver ("Intel(R) xxx Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller" in your Device Manager) or Microsoft built-in driver ("Standard SATA AHCI Controller" in your Device Manager).

- PCIe SSDs in NVMe mode use Microsoft built-in driver ("Standard NVM Express Controller" in your Device Manager, recommended for DirectStorage/RTX IO) or vendor specific NVMe Controller Driver (if there is one for your SSD).

- SATA HDDs/SSDs (& PCIe Intel Optane SSDs) in RAID mode (Intel Rapid Storage Technology enabled in your BIOS) use Intel SATA RAID Driver ("Intel(R) Chipset SATA/PCIe RST Premium Controller" in your Device Manager).

Since Intel 6xx series chipsets :

VMD disabled in your BIOS :

- SATA HDDs/SSDs in AHCI mode use Microsoft built-in driver ("Standard SATA AHCI Controller" in your Device Manager).

- PCIe SSDs in NVMe mode use Microsoft built-in driver ("Standard NVM Express Controller" in your Device Manager, recommended for DirectStorage/RTX IO) or vendor specific NVMe Controller Driver (if there is one for your SSD).

VMD enabled in your BIOS (Default) :

- SATA HDDs/SSDs in AHCI mode use Microsoft built-in driver ("Standard SATA AHCI Controller" in your Device Manager) + Intel VMD Driver for Intel VMD Controller device ("Intel RST VMD Controller xxxx" in your Device Manager).

- PCIe SSDs in NVMe mode use Microsoft built-in driver ("Standard NVM Express Controller" in your Device Manager, recommended for DirectStorage/RTX IO) or vendor specific NVMe Controller Driver (if there is one for your SSD) + Intel VMD Driver for Intel VMD Controller device ("Intel RST VMD Controller xxxx" in your Device Manager).

- SATA/PCIe HDDs/SSDs in RAID mode (Intel Rapid Storage Technology enabled in your BIOS) use Intel VMD Driver for Intel VMD Managed Controller & Intel VMD Controller devices (Respectively "Intel RST VMD Managed Controller xxxx" & "Intel RST VMD Controller xxxx" in your Device Manager).

/!\ SATA Controller and/or PCIe SSDs need to be mapped under VMD to use RAID mode with SATA/PCIe HDDs/SSDs /!\
(this will automatically enable Intel Rapid Storage Technology / RAID mode if it wasn't already)

You might wonder why ASUS has enabled VMD by default, and what is the point of enabling VMD if not using RAID ?

Because VMD provides certain features usable even without using RAID, like error isolation from the Host OS, hot-plug and surprise removal support, standardized LED Management ... (hence the fact that Intel advises OEMs to enable VMD by default when VMD is present).

Bad advice, v10.1.19284.8351 still not working on z790 with 13th gen CPU. At least on my end.

It’s not .8351 it’s the new .8344 driver he posted for the 13th gen with the 9/28 date
My fault, I somehow already had .8344 installed so when he said new driver, I assumed .8351

Before it was 8341 for 13th gen mate, 8344 got updated when i posted.
8351 is still only for 12th gen.

Hi everyone,

I understand the confusion generated, CPU doesn't matter normally in the thread, the thread requirements (Motherboards with Intel 6xx/7xx series chipsets) prevail (unless otherwise specified or exceptional/temporary).

But we are precisely in an exceptional/temporary situation which I have already explained that is related to the root cause that I identified then reported to you here even before ASUS released them and then removed them from your motherboards support pages/Armoury Crate. The situation should return to normal with the next Intel Chipset Drivers release more recent than 10.1.19284.8351 package version.

Also, in the meantime, If you installed last Intel Chipset Drivers package for Alder Lake CPU but you want since to switch to a Raptor Lake CPU, before installing your CPU :

- Follow this process to cleanup :
- Uninstall your current Intel Chipset Drivers package if you have any installed (via Start > Settings > Apps) then restart your PC.
- Launch Driver Store Explorer (Right click on "Rapr.exe" > Run as administrator) > Check the boxes of all versions of Intel drivers which .inf contains system word in the System device category (if you find them).
- Check the box "Force Deletion" then click on the "Delete Driver" button then restart your PC.

- Install last Intel Chipset Drivers package for Raptor Lake (13th Gen) from the first post of this thread.
So just to be sure, I do all this before installing the new cpu right ?
Even the last one ?
Install last Intel Chipset Drivers package for Raptor Lake (13th Gen)

Hi,

If you want to switch from Alder Lake CPU to Raptor Lake CPU yes, everything after "before installing your CPU".
Thank you, happily i found this cause today i tried to switch from 12 to 13, ended up with this "inaccessible boot device".
Spent all this afternoon for nothing !
Tomorrow will be better, hope so :D

Hi,

Can you confirm that you have indeed used the latest version 10.1.19263.8344 for Raptor Lake (13th Gen) ?

If so, can you show us a screenshot of the System devices category of your Driver Store Explorer please ?
I gave up and reinstalled Windows, now all is working perfectly, i tried to rebuild the BCD without luck, spent like two days trying to fix that.
And yes I had installed the good chipset before mounting the new CPU, followed all your "tutorial".
Now, is that needed to install MEI/VMD/IO and so on ?

Yes,

Intel MEI, Intel VMD (if you have not disabled it in your BIOS), Intel Serial IO, Intel GNA (if you have enabled it in your BIOS), and so on.

I guess that's why i have this right now, installing MEI already removed like 5 or 6 missing PCI Device.
Thanks again, much appreciated.

"RAID Controller" = Intel VMD but the "PCI Device" and "SM Bus Controller" you have left are normally related to Intel Chipset Drivers, so something is wrong if you already installed them (maybe an Intel Chipset Drivers conflicts), maybe have you updated Intel Chipset Drivers from Windows Update - Optional updates (Intel Chipset Drivers from Windows Update - Optional updates must not be installed if you use .exe installer).
