windows 11 pro
Installed Windows 11 on my partitioned ssd to see if i like it rather than upgrading my Win 10 pro using dual boot.
Have decided to stick with Win 11 but baffled as to how i transfer the digital licence currently on the Win 10 Pro to the Win 11 pro installation.
Would rather stick with the new install and eventually delete the Windows 10 partition.
Windows 10 is showing as activated with a digital licence and windows 11 not activated.
Is this possible or do i have to upgrade the Windows 10 to 11?

It should be already activated. Check system -activation in Settings.

Windows 10 is showing as activated with a digital licence and windows 11 not activated.
The digital licence is not tied to the installed Windows, it it linked to the hardware ID of the PC and stored on the Microsoft activation servers. A digital licence for Pro makes no distinction between Windows 10 and Windows 11, it is a digital licence for Windows 10/11 Pro.

Your Windows 11 should activate from your existing digital licence as soon as it can connect to the internet. If it has not activated, make sure you're connected to the internet, open a command prompt and type the command slmgr /ato

Already tried that and it failed. Is it because I can't have 2 versions of windows on same pc using same digital licence.
I am logged in to MS with win 10 and 11 using same account.
Should I rename the Win 10 and Win 11 device names so both are same. One is Homepcwin10 and other is homepcwin11 although thought the digital licences were associated with the hardware which has not changed.

That is not true. I have many machines that dual boot Windows 10 and Windows 11, each installed with the generic key. Both installs of Windows are activated by the PC's single digital licence.

The digital licence is tied to the PC's hardware ID, it really doen't care what version of Windows you are running at any particular time. The only thing that matter is whether it's Home or Pro, a digital licence for Home will not activate Pro.

I have not yet seen anyone ask if the Windows 10 and 11 editions are the same. For example, they BOTH need to be Windows Home, or Pro, or whatever. For example, if the activated copy of Windows is Home, then the other installation needs to be Home.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Bree already noted that the edition must be the same,.

Is this possible or do i have to upgrade the Windows 10 to 11?

It is possible. Exactly what I did to check out Win 11. They need to be the same version, as Bree and hsehestedt stated above.
