Hi folks
Is the Dynu free dynamic dns service any good for accessing files from your own computer over the internet -- and any good as far as speed is concerned for streaming.

I'm not sure how much slow down you'd get because presumably all your upload traffic would have to go through their servers -- what I really want to do is run KODI or VLC as a client on a Firestick and access my home computer (remotely over the internet) to play multi-media video. Internet at both ends is fine - Upload at remote end around 1 Gbps and same for download at the remote end -- but have no idea what the dynu dns servers do in the middle.

I need to play the multi media content. I don't want to download the files at the remote site. I can do that already without too much of a hassle if I need the odd file or two. Any ideas would be appreciated -- I'd rather avoid setting up my own vpn on the home computerwhich seems quite a bit of work to get it working properly.

Cheers
jimbo

Pretty sure that's just a dynamic DNS services. You'd still need a remote access solution such as a VPN or at least port forwarding which I don't recommend

Hi there
It is a dynamic DNS service - so actually I don't need that any more - I've got a nice script that via command line can send me by email directly (doesn't need any email client) every so often the remote IP (external) address if it changes which after a logon doesn't seem to.

What I've decided to do now is via Putty get to the remote server which I can always fix on the local lan to a specific address , and create my own vpn via open-vpn or whatever and then access remotely via SSH or again whatever. A browser should work OK if the IP address is known too.

cheers

Your traffic shouldn't touch their servers as it's only DNS - all it's doing is resolving the ddns domain name to the reported IP of your network.

Thanks folks for clearing that up.
