Windows Update Enable or Disable Get Latest Updates as soon as available in Windows 11

  • Staff
Windows_Update_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" in Windows 11.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22621.1635, Microsoft added a new "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" toggle under Settings > Windows Update.

When you turn it on, Microsoft will prioritize your device to get the latest non-security updates and enhancements when they are available for your device.

Some of these updates may also be available in Optional updates to manually install if not available to automatically download and install from Windows Update.

hi Brink,

to me the toggle to enable this option is grayed out due to my organization's policy.
I did try to enable it through the REG file (I have admin rights), but still it didn't work.
is there any other option I could try, or any setting I could change in the registry editor?

Hello ChaJam, and welcome. :alien:

If you are joined to a work or school domain with them enforcing this policy, then there's nothing you can do to enable it unless they change their policy settings.

Sorry this might be a dumb question, but are these updates that come by enabling this setting some "beta" updates or are they final builds that have been tested, but i just get them early?

Makes me just wonder what is the point of this setting since we get the updates either way every 2 weeks right?

Hello, :alien:

The link below can give you more details on this, but:

Whether you set the toggle to Off or On, you'll still get the regular security updates as usual. The toggle determines how quickly you get the additional non-security updates, fixes, feature updates, and improvements.

Hello ChaJam, and welcome. :alien:

If you are joined to a work or school domain with them enforcing this policy, then there's nothing you can do to enable it unless they change their policy settings.

I have this same issue, while I ain't logged into any Org MSFT email id (account), & using my personal MSFT Outlook email ID in 22624.1635, this option is still greyed out for me, showing the same as @ChaJam posted earlier here,

I tried the reg setting that @Brink added here & rebooted but still the same so commenting.

If @ChaJam or anyone found any solution (workaround), kindly let me (us) know.

to me the toggle to enable this option is grayed out due to my organization's policy.
I did try to enable it through the REG file (I have admin rights), but still it didn't work.
is there any other option I could try, or any setting I could change in the registry editor?
I had it greyed out in one on my machines too, but not for any of the others the others.

Turned out that the 'organisation's policy' that was blocking it was a Target Release Version that I had set while it still had Windows 10, and remained in place when I later upgraded it to Windows 11.

Check in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate and if present delete ProductVersion, TargetReleaseVersion, and TargetReleaseVersionInfo. After that it was no longer greyed out for me. See Option Three in @Brink's tutorial here:

Simply that you can't set both 'Get the latest updates as soon they're available' and specify a a target release you don't want to go beyond. The two are mutually contradictory and one of them has to give.

In this case it's the target release version policy that wins out and disables the 'get the latest...' option in Windows Update.

wonder if it's only a few of us or for all? Bcz not all are facing this same issue.

I did the following for my workaround /solution

1. Deleted these reg keys first

1.png

2. And then modify this reg value "IsContinuousInnovationOptedIn"
2.png

3. Formed the .REG file & added in Windows POST setup & it worked. The toggle is active since the 1st boot of Win installation by this method.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"TargetReleaseVersion"=-
"TargetReleaseVersionInfo"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings]
"IsContinuousInnovationOptedIn"=dword:00000001

The toggle and option is missing completely for me still on 22621.1702. I have tried the REG file with no luck.

I just did what you and SMO3 suggested and it gave me a CU and bumped me up to 22621.1778 from 22621.1702.. Strange.

Not that strange if you think about it. 22621.1778 is the Preview CU KB5026446. Normally you'd find these optional CUs listed in Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, where you could choose to install it (or not) as you see fit. But you have asked to 'Get the latest updates as soon as they're available'. This one was available so Windows Update installed it automatically.

So did I, and I got it installed automatically too.
