Apps Enable or Disable OneDrive in Windows 11

  • Staff
OneDrive_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the OneDrive feature for all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

OneDrive is built-in to Windows 11 by default.

With OneDrive, you can sync files and folders between your computer and the cloud, so you can get to your files from anywhere - your computer, your mobile device, and even through the OneDrive website at OneDrive.live.com. If you add, change, or delete a file or folder in your OneDrive folder, the file or folder is added, changed, or deleted on the OneDrive website and vice versa. You can work with your synced files directly in File Explorer and access your files even when you’re offline. Whenever you’re online, any changes that you or others make will sync automatically.

If you like, you can disable OneDrive in Windows 11.

If you disable OneDrive integration:
  • Users can’t open OneDrive.
  • OneDrive will not run at startup for all users.
  • Microsoft Store apps can’t access OneDrive using the WinRT API.
  • OneDrive doesn’t appear in the navigation pane in File Explorer for all users.
  • OneDrive files aren’t kept in sync with the cloud.
  • Users can’t automatically upload photos and videos from the camera roll folder.
Reference:

You must be signed in as an administrator to enable or disable the OneDrive feature in Windows.

Disabling OneDrive in Windows 11 does not delete or remove the C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive folder for users.

Disabling OneDrive in Windows 11 does not prevent users from using OneDrive.com online in their web browser.

To fully disable OneDrive, it is recommend to turn off OneDrive backup for any folders before disabling OneDrive.

Brink, thank you so much! Your instructions made it clear how to deal with this, and I've now retrieved my folders. I do intensely dislike that onedrive sync is the default, as I should have been given notice before anything was synced to any server. I appreciate your expertise!

You're most welcome.

You do have the option to turn off backing up those folders to OneDrive during OneDrive Setup, but yeah they are turned on by default. They should be turned off by default instead.

Hi Brink,

Unless I'm dreaming I thought you posted a tutorial on how to prevent OneDrive from being installed during the Windows 11 installation process?

Hello mate, :-)

It may be from the clean install tutorial including a step for how to skip using OneDrive if prompted during setup.

Hey Brink

Thanks. It's from here, easily missed. I'm not sure if shows up in the Home version of W11:

Yeah, it should be a lot clearer instead of how easily it is to allow by this intentional "Next" button that most people click on by default.

I believe it's intentional.

What they should've happened is a yes or no box with no option to progress to the next level unless you select yes or no.

Hi Brink,

Unless I'm dreaming I thought you posted a tutorial on how to prevent OneDrive from being installed during the Windows 11 installation process?

That OOBE screen doesn't actually uninstall OneDrive, it only changes the default behavior.

To completely remove OneDrive from a clean install of Windows, you can copy a single script to any ISO. This script will run after OOBE to delete OneDrive and clean up the auto-install triggers. But there's one serious catch: this method doesn't work on any PC with a Windows OEM license in BIOS. That's a Windows limitation.

1. Copy Windows ISO image to USB (using MCT, Rufus, etc.)
2. cd E:\ [USB drive letter]
3. mkdir sources\$OEM$\$$\Setup\Scripts

Copy SetupComplete.cmd to the Scripts folder. Now boot off USB as you would normally do.

If you change your mind and want to use OneDrive, download it from Windows Store or from the OneDrive website.

PS - Before anyone asks why the script is so short:
When OneDrive setup never runs, you don't need the other cleanup steps you see in every OneDrive removal script.

Hey Brink!
So, I've used BOTH methods, but this "OneDrive - Personal" link in the File Explorer still exists. Current running the latest build of Windows 11 (22621.1992). Have you run into this yet? Haven't yet figured out a method to fully remove it. =\

Never mind, I found it! =)

Source answer from:

As long as the registry string located at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}
is indeed:
"OneDrive - Personal"

You can remove the link, using the two registry files that I've attached! =)

If not, you will need to change the key name "{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}" to match the key that corresponds to the "OneDrive - Personal" link in the registry file, prior to running it!
