Fedora 41 users -- enable VLC to play H264/H265/HEVC etc again

Hi folks
Whether on a real or VM -- if you are testing Fedora 41 and want to get VLC to play almost all codecs again properly simply cut and paste this line into a console :


sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm && sudo dnf groupupdate multimedia --setop="install_weak_deps=False" --exclude=PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin && sudo dnf groupupdate sound-and-video

Job done -- "Alles in Ordnung" -- working properly again now.

Thanks for posting this.
Do you need to re-exclude packages with each update? Or is this permanent?

I've encountered this also in F39 and Centos S9 / Alma9. Using the system codecs for now.
Happened a short while ago that VLC was added to system repository, then some conflicts with the RPM Fusion version were risen during update. Installing VLC from system got its own 'free' codecs. Installing RPM Fusion packages works for instance by selecting the repo to install from.
Code: 
sudo dnf reinstall vlc vlc-core --repo rpmfusion-free-updates

Seems pretty permanent -- I've done a few updates since -- remember Fed 41 is a rolling release. I haven't needed those commands again.

In fact just did an upgrade a few minutes ago including a kernel update -- VLC stillworking fine.

Thanks. That looks fine.
I think I get it now. The command is one-time and will install just the needed extras from rpmfusion. Then on each update the packages will get their own updates when available.
So it should enable the system VLC to get the rpmfusion codecs...
I'll have to play with this in a VM to see how it mixes, I got confused at one time with the difference between EL9 - F39 and because there were two VLC apps from the two repo's at the same time.

Not pertinent to this post but in an earlier post, you asked me where I got Fedora 41 and of course it was the Fedora Nightly Compose Finder

Hi there
when using F41 use the rawhide fusion repos -- easy enough done to get the appropriate / correct fusion repos

for the FREE stuff :

sudo dnf install \
https://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

for the NON FREE stuff

sudo dnf install \
https://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

These will pick up the correct repos for your installed release.
