File sharing between Windows XP and 11

Does anyone here have a good guide on how to file share between Windows XP and 11? The reason for Windows XP is that was the last version that Symantec's WinFax Pro worked on.

I can think of a lot of file types that would share seemlessly between XP and 11, but what kind of files are you talking about?

Well, the way to share it by browsing in File Explorer would be the ideal way. I know with Windows XP when there are two machines, one could do IPX/SPX.

Do you have networking set up on your Windows XP computer?

I have two desktop computers with Windows XP set up with networking. I can see both Windows XP computers from my Windows 11 laptop. From my Windows 11 computer I can read/write files to the shared folders on my Windows XP folders.

I can't see any other computers from my Windows XP computers. I need to work on that because they should at least be able to see each other.

Computers:

• PALOMINO: Windows XP Pro
• THOROUGHBRED: Windows XP Pro
• STARSHIP: Windows 11 Home

The Windows XP used to work with networking when I had other Windows XP machines on the same network using the IPX/SPX protocol but at that time but that was 2009 and earlier. Now I only have one Windows XP machine and I am not sure what protocol to use so they can both see each other and I remember I tried to network between one Windows 11 notebook and one Windows 10 notebook which did not meet the requirements for Windows 11 and when browsing, it does not show the other computers on the network unless I type the path itself. What protocol did you actually use so they can all see each other? Thanks!

I don't remember how I set up the XP computers. I just went through the usual network setup. I obviously did something right because all my other computers can see them fine. My laptop is the only one using Windows 11. My other computers are all using Windows 10.

I still have work to do because the two Windows can't see each other. They used to. I will check on their settings tomorrow and try to figure out what the problem is.

BTW, these computers were in storage until last year when I decided to get them going again. I probably hadn't used them in well over 5 years. Configuring anything in Windows XP is a lot harder than in newer versions of Windows. I know I used networking 20 years ago when I set up these computers. I just need to figure out how to do it again.

On the XP machine you need to enable SSP / NTLM (and of course on the windows 10 machines SMB1 must be enabled).

I'm a bit busy currently but I'll get out one on my XP VM's later and post how to do it -- it's quite simple though.

Be careful though as there's a security risk -- however if you keep the XP off the Internet you should be OK -- or better run XP as a VM.

Here in the screenshot -- the XP machine can see and access Wulf (Linux NAS server with large HDD's - 20 TB size) no problem, it's "C" drive is enabled for sharing (Refur1) and it can see and access the W11 machine (Swarthundur 7)



Now I need to logon to the W11 machine to check that XP is visible and accessible.

Give me a few minutes to logon and take a screen image. I've just updated that system to the latest "Birdie" release (Canary) on a physical Windows machine.

Back again :

Here's the view from the W11 machine (swarthundur7) can see the same machines as the XP one.



Clicking on Refur1 (the XP machine) I now can see the contents of it's "C" -- shared -- drive.


The only other thing you *might* have to do is install the openssh server (from add optional features) on the W11 machine and start it -- usually only needed if you SEND files from Windows TO a NAS etc. Probably not needed in your case. You also need to ensure SMB1 is enabled on the W11 machine too.

Finally don't forget to enable sharing (on the XP system,) with files / folders you want to share too.

I followed all the guides and checked for everything I could with network setup. Everything is configured correctly. I don't know what the problem is because I used to be able to see the network computers. All the Windows 10 and 11 computers can see the Windows XP computers so that is all that is needed to share files both ways. That is, all the sharing is done using the shared folders in the Windows XP computers. It is ironic that the two Windows XP computers can't share files between themselves.

@MisterEd - You are right that it is weird when both computers are running the same Windows version.

Winsows XP only supports SMB 1.0.

For a Windows 10/11 machine to be able to access shares on an XP machine that W10/11 PC must have 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Client' enabled in Windows Features.





For XP to be able to access shares on a Windows 10/11 machine, that W10/11 machine must have 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Server' enabled in Windows Features.



To be able to see other computers, make sure that the XP machine is in the same Workgroup as the Windows 10/11 machines.

That should be enabled by default. You still need to set on XP the LAN authentication layer like I showed in a previous post (about 3 back in the thread) for most things -- especially if accessing non Windows hares on a NAS.

You also need to ensure (of course) Network discovery turned ON on the W11 machine, allow incoming connections to this computer and set the appropriate sharing options on the XP system. If you've any sort of encryption, bit locker, or 128 bit security on sharing then it won't work -- XP can only habdle 64 bit security on shares etc.

You should be able to RDP on to the XP system too from W11 with just the IP address. Not sure in your case but you might also neet netbios too. shouldn't really need it if you can play around with the IP addresses and the other machines can access XP.

Again easy to connect to a Windows XP machine (VM or physical) via RDP if you need to from the latest W11 systems -- even the Birdie release (Canary).

This XP system is even running on a LINUX remote NAS Host and being connected via a Windows 11 system itself running as a VM on a REMOTE Linux host so no probs whatsoever if you need to access XP from a W11 HOST system too. Much easier on HOST W11 systems -- just get network connections OK and it all works.

So setup :

Local Machine : Linux laptop running arch linux with KVM and Windows "Birdie" release as a VM.
From the VM RDP to the XP VM.

Remote VM running on another Linux HOST (one of my Remote Linux NAS servers also runnuing Arch Linux) with KVM and running Windows XP as a VM.

"Seemples" !!!!

People make this stuff far more complex than it really is. Just do the old fashioned stuff and draw (with real Pen and paper !!!) the network map and configure. Should normally work OK.

Any idea how to get SKY GO working on the latest Canary release. I've an ROI box so I can watch Sat 15.00 Premier league footie --for some reason still geo blocked in the UK but on ROI box with SKY GO has always worked until latest update of W11 -- Using a W11 laptop for this -- funnily enough still works on other beta releases on Windows even when booting from vhdx files from an external device (WintoGo type of thing). (ROI for those who don't know --Republic of Ireland -- still in EU and still gets UK TV progs).

I like SKY GO to watch recorded programs from SKY from a SKY Q box on a remote computer screen (in my Man shed) when not in the main living room - especially when the "women folk" are watching total rubbish like Soaps etc.

I also like the Snooker too !!!.
