Finally installed 11 today

My first impression, I'm not impressed. I don't mind change, I'm a retired LAN/WAN Network and hardware help desk manager and "change" was a given in our nationwide network.

I'll have to dig through and find what is different and how to get around.

Under the same impression as yourself - rearranging the deckchairs etc.

But MS need to make money, it's always about the bottom line so I think this release is more about corporate - Office/Teams/etc.

I'll stay with it for a bit longer as it's not doing any harm running on my 'old' core i7 but unless there are benefits (for me) I'll just revert back to 10.

I was underwhelmed too. Perhaps we should wait for Windows 12 since Windows 11 is a repeat of Vista / Windows 8 due to poor software design (so far).

I don't know.. so far I like it and use it everyday. It is mostly GUI changes but I like the fresh new look they came up with and the did promis33e rounded corners and we finally got them

I don't know what else they could have done.. it is what it is.

My thoughts after the second day with 11. Microsoft has a history of good/bad/good/bad OS'.

Define bad? This is so similar to 10 it's about the same and 10 is a great OS

Yes, they do. I chronicled a bit of it in another thread.

It's definitely time for the bad batch one to come upon us. Whether they can pull themselves out of this rut remains to be seen.

Windows 11 does not give me any form of WOW effects. For me it is Windows 10 with a new skin. Maybe the Settings App is a tad better now, but it still needs another 5 years of work at least.

"Bad" was probably the wrong word to use. I (and apparently others) were expecting more than Win 10. Maybe that's good that there is no complete overhaul??

But there is a history of OS's and "great/not so great, great/not so great, etc.

My background in computers goes back to "BPC" (Before P C's) and to an IBM 360/20 and IBM 2260 terminals.

I think that "programmatically" Microsoft probably tiled themselves into some corners with Windows 10.
This left them with two choices...

1. Rip up a bunch of tiles and start over, while still calling it Windows 10, (sticking to the no new OS after Windows 10 promise).
2. Rip up a bunch of tiles and start over, and call it Windows 11.


I don't think it's possible to "finally get it all right" with a program the size of Windows.
Unless of course they make a very tiny program called Windows and then gazillions of plugins.

Nah. Bad is appropriate - after all, it is a subject PoV case, and we're all entitled to our own opinions.

I loved Vista for it's concepts to regain control of the OS and ensure better security than XP and previous OSs did. I hated that Vista simply did not run like Windows 7 did on the exact same hardware, even with clean install. I could care less about how the driver use method changed from XP to Vista, though many, many different hardware that had working drivers in XP were abandoned for Vista and later OSs. It wasn't quite so bad from 7 to 8 or 10, because, while the installer packages may not have worked, you could still manually install drivers for devices written for 7 and they could work in 8 / 10 (sometimes better than other times, of course - YMMV).

Have to agree. It was time for a change.

But I'm still with Fireberd- history has shown that after a popular, usable, and likable OS, Microsoft returns to the "Let's make them do it this way" mindset, which gets them shamed and derided publicly, and has almost always resulted in a backtrack, with a new OS release that actually works while trying to minimize the compromises they had to make to get users to accept the main focus / foci of the previously derided OS.

I just finished creating my Dual Boot System by installing Windows 11 on a new partition, using @Brink's tutorial for installing from within Windows 10.

The install went well, but that Dual Boot page is about the ugliest thing I've ever seen! Yeah, it's sort of better, but when I shut down the computer from Windows 11, I get no choice of Windows 10 or Windows 11 when I boot for the next session. However, if I shut down from Windows 10, I get a choice.

I have been getting used to Windows 11, but they've shaved off too many things I use in Windows 10. Add me to the list of "not overly impressed"; in fact, you could say I'm pretty disappointed at this point.

Maybe see if turning Fast boot off in Windows 11 helps?

I just booted into 11, and noticed that Windows 11 was the default OS. I think I need to look at that to see how to change the default; that could be my problem.

I haven't had enough time to check things out in the "boot area", and have only decided which OS to boot into when I had the opportunity.

Try MSConfig. Or else you may want BCDEdit Community Edition (for a GUI) or manually edit yourself from the CL.

If you are going to go for it then go for it, dont fear the dark side it will all be fine... Seriously, think about what you want then follow that route. I did and dont have any regrets.

Ummmm, I'm not sure I have what it takes to do any of those things, John.

My experience has been to clean install a second Windows OS onto a new or existing partition.

I believe you have to perform the CP bcdedit /timeout xxx on both OS's, identically.
