Need a new laptop and not finding anything easily. I’m using a battered old HP Pavilion DM4 which I love and had for years. It’s great to type on, chunky enough, not too big or too small (14”). Nice small central mousepad. Good ergonomics. But dropping to bits. Repaired a few times. Running windows 10 on an ssd.

So the problem I’m finding is most 13” or 14” laptops now are too thin. Some of them look fantastic but not that easy to type on. For example son has a 5 year oldHP Spectre x360. Hardly uses it now so thought I’d requisition that. But I can’t get on with it - I type a lot and typing is just too awkward. Partly the keyboard layout and ergonomics but also the enormous trackpad.

Don’t want a desktop - I’m a laptop user. I usually buy used ones for economic reasons but started looking at new ones just to try a d find something that is good for typing as a priority. I’m not bothered about touchscreens etc. Just want something like my old HP Pavilion. But it seems they don’t exist. Because they don’t have dvd drives any more so are thinner - I kind of like the slightly chunkier feel and more stable.

Anyway don’t really care if it’s thin or not but I need to type a lot and be comfortable doing it. Reviews say the HP Spectre X360 has a great keyboard (I disagree and hate the mouse pad). Don’t want a separate mouse as I rarely sit at a desk and based at home.

Any suggestions? I read the surface laptops have good keyboards - they’re available used - but they also look thin so can’t see how it can be easy to type on something so flat.

Ideally something that will run windows 11 as well!

HI Hazel123,

Welcome to the community, the Surface lineup is amazing, if you are able to spend the cash on it, it is a great deal now with the new designs of the Surface line at Microsoft.com.

My Surface pro 5 is amazing, it's light though the keyboard is amazing, well it depends on you as the type, though it is up to you : )

"Don’t want a separate mouse as I rarely sit at a desk and based at home."

You actually use a laptop in your lap? That may be unusual. I did something like that in 2008, when I had a broken ankle, and couldn't sit at a desk. However, I used a lap desk, partly to keep the heat from the laptop away from me.

I think I'd be looking at a laptop with a large display, like 17". It ought to have a large keyboard to match.

They tend to be expensive, but maybe a used one would be acceptable. A former boss of mine bought several such on eBay, pretty cheaply. Most people seem to want thin and light laptops, rather than "desktop replacements" so the large ones were relatively cheap on the used market. You don't mention a budget.

Do you want one that is upgradeable to Windows 11? You chose to post in a Win11 forum, after all.

Hi thanks both. I am an existing member :). And also old member of ten forums. Just haven’t posted for a while but been following.

Good to hear praise for the surface laptops. Couldn’t possibly buy a new one. But there are some used surface laptop 3’s available for reasonable prices.

Had another thought after posting. Business laptops are usually more traditional and chunky (with exceptions). So maybe I should be looking at used Dell latitudes or how pro books.

I hate changing laptops! I had two of the current one so plenty of spares but running out of spare parts now and it’s just reached it’s limit of repair.

You should take a look at Thinkpad laptops. The Thinkpad keyboard is famous for being very good. I'm currently typing this on a Thinkpad.

Thinkpads last long, are very serviceable and are pretty sturdy.

Brand independent,.,, I would just look for a model that has either a current Intel or AMD process that meets the 11 requirements. If I had to pick a brand I would look at an Asus.. but there are lots of good options out there.

This is becoming tedious! After a lot of searching I am kind of preferring my old HP Pavilion! The only thing wrong with it is the hinges coming apart (which is not an easy fix).

So apart from cost of new ones - it seems just about everything has soldered ram. Everything is "thin". Everything has hard sharp metal edges. (Ergonomics) and a huge trackpad. Ok so I know it's what you get used to but I don't like the idea of laptops that aren't easily upgradeable - especially ram. Thinkpads - seen a few used ones (for the price of a new 14" one in another brand). The downside is the dim screens aparently. Older ones have upgradeable ram though.

So I think it's a bit sad that new laptops all look very much the same - very thin and soldered ram - and some are hugely expensive. Disposable basically. Honestly - although ram tends to go on forever, it can die at any time - then what? Dead laptop - no replaceable ram.

Sorry for griping! Thinking of buying another used HP Pavilion DM4 lol - for £100. Won't run W11 but will do for the next 4 years. Or - an Asus Vivobook 14 - still has soldered ram but only costs £500.

Hi, I think I know what you mean - the thin laptops look truly uninspiring, and using the web to search for anything other than "thin laptop" or "2-in-1 laptop" yields ambiguous results.
However, if you are looking for an upgradable Laptop, they are still around but they can be expensive. Try these surveys as a starting point for your research:

Dell XPS 15
Lenovo ThinkBook 15p
Lenovo Legion 5i 15
Alienware Area-51m
Surface Pro X 2-in-1

Dell XPS 15
Acer Predator Helios
HP Pavilion Gaming
MSI P65 Creator
Razer Blade Stealth
ASUS ROG Strix

Otherwise, if you are just considering something more rugged than a thin laptop, then maybe consider one of these:
Dell Latitude 14 Rugged Extreme
Dell Latitude 14 Rugged
Panasonic Toughbook CF-33
HP ProBook x360 11 G1 EE Notebook PC
Lenovo ThinkPad 11e

Cheers that is really helpful. Yes I did come across some of those when looking for something more rugged and yes more expensive. The Asus Rog Strix is available used not too expensive. Although still seems a bit silly when don't actually want a gaming laptop. But what the heck.

Also seen a used Asus Zephyrus G14. Which is still a gaming laptop, sturdy, but looks more like a normal laptop. Not sure if it's upgradeable.

Yes it is. Windows 11 minimum RAM requirement is 4 GB. 4 GB is not much RAM for a 64-bit operating system, so it is recommendable to get a computer with more installed. How much more depends on your applications.

Yeah it looks like it has capacity to upgrade RAM with one SODIMM slot next to the installed soldered RAM. The RAM upgrade only works in dual channel if it matches the existing soldered RAM. If it does not work in dual channel, it should still work in single channel - albeit with a performance hit.
You have not specified the need, but that laptop does not come with a webcam - worth mentioning.

My shortlist at the moment is

1) Asus Vivobook 14 - Core i7 8gb ram 500gb ssd - £550
2) Asus Zephyris G14 - Ryzen 5 8gb ram 500gb ssd - £850
3) Used HP Pavilion DM4 Beats in v good condition - Core i5 3rd gen, 16gb ram, and use my existing 1tb samsung ssd - £200 (won't run Windows 11 but keep me going a couple of years on Windows 10).

Tempted with the latter but seems a shame when I could put that £200 towards a new laptop. Although it's a machine I'm happy with

What is your budget btw? That makes a huge difference in what we can recommend.

Ah yes budget - very small lol. I was thinking max £500 which is why I was looking at used laptops with 8th generation and above processors - but didn't find much. The Asus Zephyrus is over budget - but if it fits all the criteria ......

Thanks. I was reading something about that on Reddit. Comments were that upgrading the ram actually slowed it down due to the dual channel business and better option was to get one with larger soldered ram (which would be out of my price bracket).

I'd be ok with 8gb ram but wonder - if the soldered ram died, would adding a stick in the second slot work? Assume it would then only be single channel ram.

Shawn

Actually I would love a surface pro - tried one before. Not really for using on lap though, which I do a lot.
