Folks Opinions on Third-Party Uninstallers + Libreoffice corruption

Hey. A friend of mine recommended BC Uninstaller. I guess she's used it and hasn't had issues. For me, I think I've corrupted my registry. BC Uninstaller offers the option to remove left over registry entries of uninstall Apps. I couldn't resist the temptation of a cleaner registry. The better angels of my nature were telling me to ignore that options. But anyways. Since uinstalling a number of apps this way, I've seen one large, the app being LibreOffice. I'm not surprised,. As a longtime Windows user I've noticed Windows is happiest if you keep to the stock configuration as much as possible/don't use third party configurations/tweaks. And only install the apps you absolutely need. Sigh, When I use Windows it seems sometimes I have to temper the tech/nerd enthusiast in me. There's so much software to try. Under Linux I've never/rarely had this issue. But of course it's a completely different OS.

So, I've had problems with LibreOffice. No matter what version I install or how many times I uninstall/reinstall. The writer icon, is not in the start menu. All the other apps' icons are. Base, Calc, Impress, etc. The symptoms started after I preformed a clean install of Libreoffice 24.2.2.3. After uninstalling 23.2As time went on, I not only had the icon issue, but when I tried to save documents. The only file format options were HTML and plain text. Also writer opened in the web layout view and not in the normal print layout view. I don't remember switching to the web layout view. I was able to fix both the web layout view, and lack of file format options by following a liberoffice how-to, but the generic writer icon issues still persists. I looks like a white blank document. If all else fails, I have a system image backup I can restore. But I'd like to avoid that, if possible as a couple of days ago. I just setup my studio gear. An M-Audio ProFire 610 to be specific. I did some googling and found out the Windows 7 drivers work okay in Windows 11. I Installed them and everything pretty much works as expected.

My next anvenue of attack is to restore the removed registry entries. BC Uinstaller offer to backup copies of the registry for each app the user ellects to remove the stray registry entries for.

Failing that, I"m just gonna restore the old system image backup.

What do folks think of this strategy. I've alredy tried system restore. As BC Uinstaller also creates restore points automaticlly.

Also, although I've probably answered my own question, I be curious to know others' experience and/or opinions of third-party uninstallers. I remember back in the XP days using Revo Uinstaller without issues.

Revo Uninstaller is good. It won't remove any apps not listed in either new Installed Settings or the old Program and Features applet in the Control Panel.

Hey, Horse Lover (I love 'em too!), try Revo, and when you're satisfied that it does what you want it to and doesn't do what you don't want it to, get Pro. It's cheap, and great.

No matter how I uninstall I always use CCleaner registry cleaner afterwards to remove the leftovers. I run it several times to be sure, seems to work well for me. Might try it then reinstall and see if it fixes the glitches.

Support above comments on forum favourite RevoUninstaller (freeware version is enough)

Also suggest/recommend Geek Uninstaller (single file, no installation required)

Re LibreOffice ... just manually create a shortcut link icon to Writer and move it into the Start menu items (ProgramData/Microsoft/Windows/Start Menu/Programs/(LibreOffice folder)

I've noticed Windows is happiest if you keep to the stock configuration as much as possible/don't use third party configurations/tweaks.
Not for me, I tweak Windows's brains out to suit what *I* want, not what Microsoft wants me to have or thinks that I should have. 3rd party software rulez (There, I've gone and poked the purist bears with a stick ... :devilish: )

But, using registry cleaners ... I think you now know the answer to that.

Dead/leftover/unused/and-the-like files can take up valuable space on a drive, but similarly described registry entries on the other hand .. Meh!

Here an enthousiastic user of Revo (free) as well.

And only install the apps you absolutely need.
I do install many (mostly freeware) programs to do tests with. But always try them out first in a VirtualBox Win11 environment. LibreOffice I did try several times, at the end not being the program I would like and so simply deleting the snapshot of VirtualBox that I made of the installed version. No registry remains at all, my normal system stays clean that way (except for the contamination caused by the use of regular apps and of course Windows itself).

If you are testing a lot of apps, I certainly can recommend you to install VirtuaBox (or some other virtual system) and install Windows on it (probably the best in the same version as your normalsystem). You don't need to activate it, because it will function without that anyway. The only thing you can't do on a nonactivated system is change userinterface settings. But that is not that bad for testing app purposes.

Space is cheap and the entire registry is all of 200MB on my disk, so I opt not to use any utilities to clean it. Leaving key/values often has no impact on the system and deleting the wrong values can tank your system. To each their own I suppose.

Revo Uninstaller is good. It won't remove any apps not listed in either new Installed Settings or the old Program and Features applet in the Control Panel.
Revo Pro works great for me.

It's been Revo around here for 15 years or so. It cleans up leftover files and registry entries too and has never once caused me any problems.

I use HiBit Uninstaller Portable, surprisingly it performed better than paid ones in 2 independent and user's tests.

I'm of the opinion that if I need a 3rd party uninstaller then I need to re-install Windows again from scratch.

Any App that doesn't have a sensible un-install option in it should IMHO NEVER be installed. Since I essentially use vhdx (physical) files and keep a couple I just delete the vhdx file and restore the old one. I rarely have any Windows OS installed systems > 40 GB and since I have on a NAS system around 40 TB of storage space - backing up vhdx files isn't a problem !!!

If you use vhdx physical files and only have the OS and apps on it (rest of your private data e.g music, photos, work things, documents etc store on separate devices/ cloud / combination of both) you never need to bother with backing up OS with things like Macrium.

Data backup is another issue -- that merits a whole new subsection in itself -- zillions of strategies to use. I find using rsync perfect (it's got a GUI front end too --grsync) to send data from windows laptops / systems to my NAS but there are as I said a whole load of ways people need to deal with data rather than just the OS itself.

I can't be bothered with such last century methods as incremental / differential backups. These facilities might be fine for large corporations / public databases etc but for most home users -- you don't need them - which is why I think excellent programs like Macrium in the past which were good but as we move on towards the 2nd half of C21 those sorts of programs will become increasingly redundant.

cheers
jimbo
