FRAMEWORK laptops: Modularity or Miniaturization?

This is a new type of laptop in town:

Framework

Reviewers are all extremely happy with the idea. Linus (LinusTechTips) is one of the investors too.

Idea is great and highly welcome in today's times when miniaturization and intent to lock devices down to make them unrepairable is the choice of OEMs.

I'm not the type of person who will drop gadgets or be rough with them. All my purchases tend to last a very long time and work fine without giving problems. So that makes this decision a little difficult for me.

Miniaturization comes with its own benefit of compactness and great looking devices. This also means that one has to make the right decision during purchase and never look back.

So what would you prefer?

I don't like Miniaturization I just love what I got with the A51m R2

You have just gotten used to the large screen.

13 or 14 inch is my preferred size for laptops. The overall experience from usability and portability is great.

If smaller phones (5.5" full screen) with top end hardware comes to the market, I would prefer that one. Unfortunately, the smaller phones today don't pack in the best hardware available.

Mine is 17inch on the laptop, just right for my eyes as I am about 2 ft from the screen (and wear Glasses to see it with)

I have a 17" full 4k HDR-10 Touch screen on my laptop and a 32" full 4k HDR-10 On the desktop [plus an Output display that is a 43" 4K HDR-10 screen - I use this to display a full image when I'm working on the detail on one of the other screens ]

13.5 " is way too small

My HP Envy x360 has a 15.6" screen and I get a lot of eye strain if I use it to long. @TheMystic, it's not always about what one gets use too. Some of us need larger screens to be able to see it comfortably or even at all.

That's not a problem if you travel a lot -- just look at people using tiny mobile phone screens !!!
Decent travelling laptops with that size screen are perfect for loads of apps.

I've used some on Icelandic volcano measurement stuff -- take the initial data on a small lightweight laptop --then if necessary when you need to escape in a hurry you can just get rid of the laptop after uploading data to the Icelandic weather bureau or whatever organisation you have for monitoring that type of event . Upload via satellite or whatever.

How many people on these forums have actually used laptops out in the field where decent decisions and timely data uploads can save loads of lives. Windows isn't all evil believe it or not and that's from me a big Linux user. !!!!

Big heavy laptops with huge screens don't help at all. Smaller ones ruggidized if possible are real the king in these situations.

Those old panasonic rubberized container ones for example like some of those UK Gas engineers use when visiting people's homes to repair gas boilers even if they have to be abandoned later due to danger in the field are brilliant -- maybe some of those things are even running Windows XP -- I don't know but those things still have communication after all sorts of problems - e.g fire, floods, environmental conditions etc where modern laptops might have given up the ghost hours before. The fastest and most modern equipment isn't always the best choice.

Incidentally :

Any decent PC will have connectors to use even huge 60ins or > sizes via HDMI or whatever.

For my usage I need a large screen with a high resolution 4k or higher I'm not sure they even make a 4K 13" Screen, and even if they did it would be way too small for image reproduction and editing, a standard image for me starts out at 4000 x 6000 Pixels [24 Mpx + [and can be larger with panoramics and matrix images]. I could use a small screen for basic word processing and web browsing but that is not what I do that often, when travelling.

I see your point @jimbo45 My 17" laptop never leaves the desk at home. My 15'' laptop is a dell inspiron very light but is never used outside. The 17"Alienware is so heavy and needs 2 power supplies it really isn't portable. I hope you could see my point that I need a certain size monitor because of an eye injury

I most certainly prefer to do all my heavy work at the PC, though!

Nice speakers. Been seeing all sorts of adds for Edifier here HiFiVision.com

Anyway, my Audioengine A5+ powered speakers are still going strong, but I've been looking to upgrade to something more "refined". The A5+ are nice, especially when paired with the S8 sub, but for jazz/jazz vocals, something a bit smoother would be nice.

BTW what are you running those off?

What we really need are "arm computers" like this one from the movie: The Abyss

This pic is just to show the shape. It would have a touch screen, and be a smart phone, and be able to access our home computer. Ofc it would be a lot more sleek than this deep sea diving, model.

We have smart phones, we have the useless fit bit watches, we have 4G, 5G etc., we have curved screens, we have touch control. They all need to be combined.
Like if you're right handed, you wear the arm comp on your left wrist, and the opposite wrist for left handers.

It could be built into a thing like an elastic vambrance.
