Windows 11
Hello everyone!

I have been running Windows 11 on an unsupported PC since 2021. I'm currently on version 23H2. Now I'm trying to upgrade to version 24H2, but I keep getting an error message every time.

The upgrade process runs normally and reaches 100%, but soon after the message "The PC will restart in a few minutes" appears, the update closes with an error window like this one:

1728474631650.png

I’m using the bypass method to skip the system requirements check. However, I think the issue is not with the PC requirements check but some earlier issue on my PC.

I’ve run SetupDiag to gather information about the update error that occurred in an attempt to resolve the issue, but I don't have enough knowledge to interpret the log data. Could an experienced user please help me?

I'm getting this error:
XML:
<LogErrorLine>2024-10-08 19:53:03, Error SP Operation failed: Gather data, scope: EVERYTHING. Error: 0x8007001F[gle=0x000000b7]</LogErrorLine>

Please see thread "Let's install Windows 11 on unsupported computers", my last posts. No need to repeat here. I first failed to upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2, but then disabled all startup applications, all non-Microsoft services and some devices non needed for the upgrade. I made some changes in Registry to bypass compatibility check and then run setup /product server to upgrade. All these while disconnected from the internet.

Hi, @spapakons. Thanks for the reply. As I said previously, I had no problem skipping the compatibility checks. Upgrade installs normally... until near the end, when it suddenly exits.

I'm using the bypass methods: registry hacks (including the ones posted on Rufus' Github page), running setup /product server, etc. and (apparently) they're working fine.

I'm not sure my problem is caused by 24H2 restrictions; that's why I started a new topic. If I try to reinstall 23H2 I get the exact same error.

Things I tried:
- Repairing Windows Update.
- W11 repair install. (I get error 0xc1900101)
- Running chkdsk on all drives.
- Running SFC /scannow and DISM (scanhealth, restorehealth & startcomponentcleanup).
- Completely removing my AV software.

Try again without internet. Apparently some hidden online compatibility check makes the upgrade to fail. That's why I recommend to be offline until the upgrade is complete. Also disable all startup applications and non-Microsoft services so they won't interfere.

I believe it is. 7 pages though. We have similar(ish) pc’s you and I.

If you think it’s worth trying a different method and doing an in-pace upgrade using Rufus, you could try this. It worked for me.

Steps are under the updated links, or you could try Rufus beta 4.6

Hey, @Torus. Thanks for the reply! Here is the file:
Thanks, your HKCR values seem to be okay which is odd because I was expecting there to be some garbage values on the root of that key, which is what usually causes one of errors shown in your setupact.log.

Could you please check the following as well:

Code:
reg query HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes >> %userprofile%\Desktop\Classes.txt
reg query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes >> %userprofile%\Desktop\Classes.txt

I don't know if this helps, but earlier today I asked Chat GPT to take a look at my Logs.zip file. It was looking promising but unfortunately I hit the limit to data analysis on a free plan, and Chat GPT stopped analyzing the data. Here's what it told me:

In the setupact.log file, I found several warning messages and some errors that could be related to the upgrade issue. Here are some key points:

Warnings about incomplete capabilities:
Messages like "footprint incomplete" indicate that certain system capabilities (such as migration or service) are not fully available.

Error loading migcore.dll:

Error 0x0000007e: The migcore.dll file, which is crucial for data migration during an upgrade, failed to load. This could be blocking the migration of system data.

Issues with tracing initialization:
An error indicates that the initialization of trace logs failed, which could affect the ability to debug other issues in the process.

This error related to the migration DLL could be key.

And then it stopped processing the data because I hit the free plan limit. :(

Not that I have ever heard or read of, but I certainly don’t know everything.

If possible try an upgrade repair without internet access and with the newest iso files.

As you commented there may be blocks.

Doing an upgrade repair with a 24H2 ISO wouldn’t work as 24H2 looks for SSE 4.2 and TPM2. If it’s an unsupported PC and these are not found, the update wont proceed past the first couple of screens.

Thanks and those appear to be okay as well? Could you please upload the CBS logs (including the persist ones) from %systemroot%\Logs\CBS?
Sure. Here they are: CBS.zip

I had to upload them to Google Drive. I hope it's okay. I could not attach the files directly here, because either the size was too big (if zipped), or the extensions were not supported, if I try to attach them one by one.
