I just installed the latest Win 11. I wanted to check to see if fast startup was still disabled. I can't find it in the Settings panel, like it used to be.
I was able to check but I had to go back to the old Control Panel.

Yep, it's annoying. Over the course of several years Microsoft has only partially migrated Control Panel settings in Win 10, now it looks like they are doing the same thing over again.

Its almost like they have been doing away with a very handy function of window, for many years.

They "complicated the ham sandwich" trying to set Stereo Mix as the default input (recording) device, too. I don't mind change but when they screw it up its not change for the better.

Stereo Mix settings is one setting that's been changed to the new Settings app - all sound devices properties. :sneaky:

If you have Control Panel set to Category view:

Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Change what the power buttons do

173.png174.png

If you have Control Panel set to Icon view:

Control panel --> Power Options --> Choose what the power buttons do

175.png176.png

Notice that the wording is slightly different based upon method (Change vs Choose). I never paid attention to this before, so I cannot say if this has always been the case or not.

Once you have that open, obviously you also need to click on Change settings that are currently unavailable in order to enable / disable fast startup.

As the OP noted, this is no longer in Settings. I wonder if this means that there is a new change coming further down the pipeline for Windows 11 and / or Control Panel specifically?

It was first thing I checked after updating and it would be nice that if its going to be on by default, we at least can access it through power options in settings like you could in 10. It was in advanced power options which linked to that control panel page.
Why hide it if its still on?

Its not necessary if you have an ssd/NVME but its still on by default. Wonder how many versions of windows before it disappears

If fast startup is enabled then hibernate is also enabled (it is a prerequisite). Do you want hibernate enabled on a desktop? It takes disk space.

I didn't mean to leave impression I use either of them.

I don't even use sleep. Only power options I have are restart and shutdown.

Disk space really isn't a concern these days
