I tried to add 3D viewer as the default app for .stl files, but .stl is not in the default app list.
I tried adding stl to the advanced indexing options list, but that didn't help.

How do you add a new file type to that default app list in windows 11?

I'm trying to understand, so bear with me.....
Why do you need to add something to that list?

When I want to open a file that is not in the default list, I just right click on it, and then click on "Open With" and tell Windows what program I want to be the default program for opening that file.
I've done that for years, and never added a file type to a list in Windows.
Good Luck,

Same here. If 3d viewer isn’t an option for when you click open with, it probably will be though, find the apps directory and choose show more programs

In windows 11 22h2, if I right-click on an stl file and click on open with, I can select 3DViewer, but it isn't permanent. That must be done every time. I want it to be associated with 3DViewer so I can just click on the stl file and have it automatically open 3DViewer.

Selecting open with used to have an option where you could check "Always", but this does not.

3DViewer IS an option. The problem is .stl is not in the list of extensions where you can add a default app.

Let me try to explain this another way.
Go to System->Choose a default app for each type of file.
Scroll down the list of extensions and stl is NOT in the list so I cannot assign it a default app.
I am trying to figure out how to add it to that list.
Hope that helps.

I did that, but it does not work and the screen on mine looks different. When I click the 3DViewer, it changes the screen to what I show in the second attachment. And once again, .stl is not listed.

Once again, this is Windows 11 22H2

I assume you mean type .stl where it says file type or link type, and then type 3DVeiwer where it says "Search apps". I did that and it goes to the second page above where there is nowhere to type anything.
