@badrobot @Edwin The whole problem is .3gp is not a valid file type in his list of file types. Unless it shows up there, he can not associate a program with it.

Windows has it all tied together, if doesn't allow to change from Settings doesn't appear such option in Properties either.

Yes of course they are perfectly playable 3gp video files. With Linux I can change the associations and they are kept perfectly fine.
Will they play in any Windows media players? The reason I ask is because I'm thinking it may be a lack of the .3gp codec being installed.

There's something damaged in the registry and don't know how to fix it.
This is the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT .3gp registry entry exported from my PC, the default app is Films & TV (Movies & TV). Compare it with your registry. If you want, you could copy the code below, paste it into Notepad, then save as 3gp.reg. Then you can import the registry settings by double-clicking on the 3gp.reg file.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp]
@="WMP11.AssocFile.3GP"
"Content Type"="video/3gpp"
"PerceivedType"="video"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp\OpenWithProgids]
"AppX6eg8h5sxqq90pv53845wmnbewywdqq5h"=hex(0):
"AppXk0g4vb8gvt7b93tg50ybcy892pge6jmt"=hex(0):
"AppXqj98qxeaynz6dv4459ayz6bnqxbyaqcs"=hex(0):
"WMP11.AssocFile.3GP"=hex(0):

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp\ShellEx]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.3gp\ShellEx\{e357fccd-a995-4576-b01f-234630154e96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"

and here is my HKEY_CURRENT_USER .3gp entry.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.3gp]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.3gp\OpenWithProgids]
"AppXk0g4vb8gvt7b93tg50ybcy892pge6jmt"=hex(0):

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC and restart PC? It may fix the registry mix up.

IMHO, I still think it's a codec problem. For some reason Windows is not seeing it as installed even though you can play the files. This is only a guess so I don't know if it will work. You could try reinstalling the .3gp codec or doing a repair install of Windows.

@fortree Another poster has file association issues as well. Could you please tell me if you are running an insider build or the release version of windows 11.
I have a Build 22000.556 and the file associations are all fecked up! 🤷‍♂️

Since I stumbled across another couple of threads about associations I was trying to come up with a pattern thinking it was on one build or another, but nope. OP is on preview, you and other poster are on release. The only thing in common is in each case it's if one has chosen to use a program other than the ones MS wants us to use. Hmmm.

The solution I see it to make a clean install of W11 inside a guest virtual machine, then backup proper registry keys and restore them to host windows machine.
