is there anyway to disable msedgewebview processes? looks like it's triggered by seachhost. Found a couple of way to disable it 1# registry method 2# vivetool method. Obviously, none of them works on the latest 25h2 build.

It's used by a few things/apps. Why would you want to disable it, are you running on 4GB of ram?

save settings and close explorer

you can also block it within the firewall
restart the system then check the Task Manager.

best of luck Steve ..

Microsoft Search UI requires WebView2, and Windows will immediately respawn those processes if you kill them.

Did you try disabling Disable the Search UI?

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search > Fully disable Search UI (if available in your build)

This is the list I just scrounged:

  • Start menu search stops opening
  • Search results never load
  • The search panel becomes blank or crashes
  • Widgets board
  • Live tiles
  • News feed
  • Weather panel
  • Microsoft Teams (new version)
  • Outlook (new version)
  • Office “Account” and “Help” pages
  • Steam login window
  • Discord updater
  • Many game launchers
  • Some Windows Settings pages
Within minutes or hours, Windows will probably:
  • Detect the missing EXE
  • Attempt to reinstall WebView2 Runtime
  • Restore the file
  • Or repeatedly fail and spam the Event Log
You can end up in a loop of:
  • Broken UI
  • High CPU from repair attempts
  • Constant re‑spawning of SearchHost

im looking at that now
as i have GPO installed on home as i wanted to change swap/page file settings
forcing swap/page in to ram as the swap/page file on 25H2 caused problems with my RAMdisk

all sorted now as swap/page is now using server settings
page polling and non-page polling within the system.

sorry off topic
i shall steam iron my hands as punishment.

best of luck Steve ..

is there anyway to disable msedgewebview processes? looks like it's triggered by seachhost. Found a couple of way to disable it 1# registry method 2# vivetool method. Obviously, none of them works on the latest 25h2 build.
It doesn't matter what you do, Windows will enable it after automatic maintenance procedure.
You have to first disable windows search and then block start menu access to WebView file. there is no benefit as Windows does what it wants and never listens to you. I have done something like that and created a script for disabling WebView but it causes future problems during windows update!

Update: vivetool has now worked with the latest version, contrary to what I mentioned earlier that it didnt. All these msedgewebview2 processes are gone. I'm running win x-lite 25h2 with startallback as a smart menu . When I had it running, the processes were not present which was what I wanted. However, it was causing my screen to go black upon refreshing the desktop which is the reason I wanted to go back to stock smart menu.

vivetool.exe /disable /id:37926450

Wonder If it could have done through Group Policy or anything without using a tool.

No, but this reg file does the same thing:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\2\1694661260]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\4\1694661260]

"EnabledState"=dword:00000001
"EnabledStateOptions"=dword:00000000

Reboot for the reg file to take effect.

please find and open this folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\144.0.3719.92

within this folder there is a file named
msedgewebview2.exe

rename this exe file to
msedgewebview2.bak
Renaming it will make SFC want to including the "missing" file on it's next repair cycle. That's always the risk you run in renaming critical Windows files to prevent their use.

No, but that's the same as this reg file:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\2\1694661260]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\4\1694661260]

I think you are the same guy from NTLite right? I asked about it on the forum.
This is the registry I tried which was what you recommended

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\FeatureManagement\Overrides\8\1694661260]
"EnabledState"=dword:00000001
"EnabledStateOptions"=dword:00000000
"Variant"=dword:00000000
"VariantPayload"=dword:00000000
"VariantPayloadKind"=dword:00000000

this one is a lot different than the above

I don't think the Variant values really do that much in this situation. 90% of Overrides are controlled by the EnabledState settings.

Yeah. I'm the NTLite guy that answers most of the Windows questions.

just checked the registry. Every Overrides\x you mentioned was removed but Overrides\8. Should It be deleted as well?

Overrides represent different Priority classes (or reasons why a Feature is changed). Like it's in gradual rollout, or MS is doing an A/B test on random users. These classes are for MS internal use. But tools like ViveTool have to pick one of the 14 classes, and it defaults to 8.

Most users consider ViveTool safe, so we follow their example. Because we're using a reg key, we want to first delete any other duplicate classes where the same override is being used. You don't want conflicting settings (although they're ranked by the highest Priority number).

1. Clean up all other possible duplicates
2. Set Priority (or Overrides) 8 as the only legitimate entry for Windows to act on

I've seen some dodgy advice on ElevenForums with Feature ID reg keys, so my reg file will clean up things up. And make sure we're playing nice with ViveTool if you need to use it later.
