Hello all,

I was looking through this thread and I found that I could make a Windows 11 S Mode ISO. I was wondering how to do this, and was also wondering if the steps to make a Windows 11 S Mode ISO will be the same to make a Windows 10 S Mode ISO.

Cheers!

My question would be if you really want S mode. S Mode is more limiting, I got a new Notebook a year ago with S Mode and Microsoft 365 because it was cheap. I immediately took it out of S Mode and it has been working fine since.

I agree. Why would anyone want S-mode when you can convert to full fledged Windows.

There's a thread:

Doesn't look simple, though.

I suppose that someone might want S Mode for security reasons on a PC that is used by users with limited capabilities.

I just wanted to get a feel of what S Mode would be like, I don't think I'm going to use it as my main OS; It sounds way too limiting.
Enabling Windows S Mode has the same steps for both W10 & 11, except that W11 requires you to use Home Edition.
Thanks, I think I've seen this page before but kinda skimmed through it without really reading everything. I'll look into it though.

In the real world, S mode only exists for two reasons:
1. You're deploying PC's for an institution (like a school) and want to lock down PC's, but you don't have Pro/EDU/Enterprise available.
2. You're a PC maker selling an entry-level laptop (much like a netbook), and artificially lock it into S mode to prevent users from installing non-Store apps. So buyers don't realize how under-powered their PC really is when running normal Windows apps.

On your reason two, you mentioned that S Mode is like Windows for netbooks. Isn't this just like Windows 7 Starter for netbooks back in the day?

Kinda. S Mode allows PC vendors to provide a full copy of Home, which you can still use if you exit from S mode. But they're trying to hide the low specs from uneducated users, since more Store apps are mostly lightweight and don't stress the PC. If they can keep you from finding an app that runs really slow, the more likely you won't complain about the performance. MS is bad in the sense that it's tolerating this deceptive marketing strategy from its PC partners.

The original reason for S was to drive affordable netbooks for the K-12 market, so schools would buy PC's instead of switching to tablets running IOS or Android.

I have also found in some instances that S mode can be reactivated after a bios update.

Once to bios update has occurred, it can't be taken out of S mode again.

Never did find a fix for it.

I have discovered this while working on clients machines. Lenovo has been the worst culprit for this.

My advice is DON"T by anything with S mode unless you are planning on doing a FULL NUKE & PAVE of the computer.

Just my 2 cents worth from working on these machines.

Cheers Freck
