I hate tabs in notepad. To me, they suit a web browser, but not notepad. If I open two text files, I want them in seperate windows, the way it's always been. I know, it's a personal preference, probably exacerbated by having 5 monitors, so I have loads of space. But there should always be an allowance for people to have their own preference. I even tried going back to the old notepad, but Microsoft have somehow made it so I can't associate a text file with the old notepad. I get a weird error message saying something along the lines of "cannot associate text files with this application".

Go to Settings page in Notepad and click on "Opening files", then select the option "Open in a new window". Now when you click simultaneously on the two text files, they'll open up in separate windows.

Ahhh! Well thanks for pointing that out, I never would of found that in a million years. What possessed them to put one setting over there and everything else on the left? Oh well, they have a feedback now asking them to give me the option. Maybe they'll realise their interface is dodgy. Seems to be the in thing now, make everything look like a mobile phone. In my browser, settings is in the main menu, no cogs or piles of meaningless lines or dots.

There is no settings page in notepad, I looked through every menu.
There's a cog icon at the far top right corner of Notepad window, click it then click on "Opening files", select the option "Open in a new window".

Welcome to the forum! You'll find there's a lot to be learned and a lot of opportunity for helping here, but one basic principle about posting is that you need to read the previous posts in the thread before posting a new one. It's not a law, and it's no crime to post without knowing that your post is superfluous, but it's a good idea to give the thread a look-over before you say something that's already been said.

I'm no policeman; I'm just a friendly advisor. Look at my #6 above and you'll see what a small mistake looks like. :rolleyes:

I tried that earlier on your recommendation. I got a very weird problem, I could not associate .txt files with the old one! It just said "text files cannot be associated with this program" or something along those lines.

Oops! Forgot about that! Sorry!
Copy the following code and save it as a .reg file then merge it:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\notepad.exe]
"NoOpenWith"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\notepad.exe]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfilelegacy\DefaultIcon]
@="imageres.dll,-102"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfilelegacy\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\Windows\\System32\\notepad.exe \"%1\""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe]
"UseFilter"=dword:00000000
