The only utility I know that is capable of removing this gear icon is Explorer Patcher. Are there onther means to that effect if I want to try to use Win11 without EP?

This is how my taskbar is currently looking without EP and the gear icon is what makes it unperfect:

That gear icon, looks like the "Settings" icon.
What happens if you right click that gear icon?

Or...

It seems you have another 3rd party program affecting your Taskbar?
This is what the Windows 11 START button looks like, for example...

The Taskbar in your picture, looks like Windows 7, set on Classic theme.

Yes, I use OpenShell and 7+TT, but they do not have an option to remove that gear icon (yes, it is settings icon, also known as "control center icon", "action center icon", "quick settings icon").

I would temporarily remove Open Shell and 7+TT, and reboot the computer... to see what your Taskbar looks like normally.
I believe you can export your Open Shell settings, to use again later.

Normally, when you left click the area in the RED box you get that popup window...

You need to remove all the 3rd party tweakers you have installed. Then slowly add them back, until you see which one gives you the gear icon. There's no way for us to duplicate the problem, without using all your 3rd party tweakers.

My "guess" would be that it's 7+Taskbar Tweaker, that's doing it. But that's just a guess. You are the first person I've seen using it, and you have the first Win 11 Taskbar that I've seen, that looks like yours does.

I don't think anyone else on ElevenForum is using 7+Taskbar Tweaker, but you.

The quickest way to find the cause... is to just uninstall ALL those tweakers and reboot the comp.
THEN, add them one at a time until that gear icon appears again. Then you'll know what is causing it.

It's definitely NOT being caused by Windows 11.

I have found a solution, wrote a Windhawk mod that removes this. Took the code from EP.

Of course none. The icon appears by itself when using this reg option:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell\Update\Packages]
"UndockingDisabled"=dword:00000001
