I guess Sarasota, Fla needs rebuilt... again.

We are told here, that the effect on Tampa Bay was thankfully not as bad as anticipated. (Bad enough, though, I'm sure). The storm did as predicted lose some power on landfall.

Meanwhile, here in the UK:

Hi folks
You with Hurricanes and us with Volcanoes !!! --however bad though it is / was it seems all these predictions (which are several days in advance) are NEVER as bad as the actual event --and the one's that aren't predicted or arrive at very short notice are far worse.

If you do too much of this stuff --predicting the worst and it's a lot less than expected the public get (reasonably enough) quite sceptical and it makes it far harder for the authorities to deal with ongoing stuff -- especially when you want people to leave their homes --even more so in areas that aren't immune to a lot of even low level crime.

Any deaths are unfortunate but the toll so far seems far less than expected -- probably less than in 2hrs of the latest nonsense than is hapenning in the Middle East - just to put the whole thing in perspective.

Only advice I can give -- keep torch (wind up one if necessary, and Water -- Humans can live (probably even more in US where most are well fed to start with) for several days without food -- not pleasant but survivable, and ultra warm clothing.

Believe me I know about this stuff -- Have a Light (so you can also signal to possible would be rescue services), and water are 100% essential as is warm clothing (although in Florida I doubt whether most if any inhabitants have any !sensible "Winter clothing -- not sure if any Ski resorts exist in Palm Beach fl.).

A mobile phone probably won't be of too much use if signals get all down, and unfortunately too radios might not be of much use since the "classic FM and AM" bands will be gone and most will be new digital services from the Internet - and if that's down -- !!!

I've long since advocated while it's old tech some old AM / FM frequencies should be retained for just this type of emergency for giving info out to the public.

I mean I dont understand why people would choose to live in florida with this stuff happening constantly. Like is it really worth all the hassle? I highly doubt it.

Florida sucks.

I have family there and the prices of insurance and just everything is insane, I dont understand wanting to live in a place thats constantly treated to horrible conditions. Just move. I know it's not easy to move, but it's better to move then to put up with that imho.

I hoped that people stayed safe and evacuated regardless if they tell you that you dont need to.

I've thought that myself many times.

BUT... even the disasters are... warm. Shorts and a tanktop or even just a bathing suit and you're good to go.
I think it's just a different lifestyle. You don't really need a lot of "things".


Nature itself provides all the entertainment and things to do, that you might want.
I mean, like how much does a pair of roller skates and a bathing suit cost. Much entertainment there.

Your house gets demolished in a hurricane... no sweat. Just live on the beach for a few weeks.
Grocery store gets wiped out... no real biggie. Fish off the pier, find some clams and a few orange or coconut trees.



Up north now... your house gets destroyed, you best find some shelter fast.
You'd freeze to death in one night without well heated shelter. ^^


Before I was in construction... I guess I felt like you do. After construction, I had to look at Florida in a whole new light.
The only things built really well, are the homes in the towns where the elderly congregate and the big hotels.
Everything else looks like it came from a kit at Walmart. But no one really cares. They're all out at the beach anyway.

Sure, there are a few from "up north", that try to bring their northern lifestyle with them.
But even they break down sooner or later, and learn to golf and sip Pina Coladas.

Let's say you lived there. It's the weekend. What do you decide to do?
1. Weed the garden, and paint the house (that you know will get blown down sooner or later)?
2. Or sit in a lounge chair on the beach sipping Pina Coladas?

It's a completely different lifestyle, different priorities.

I remember once, back in the eighties I think, that the temperature dropped to 32F in Florida.
The whole state thought the world was ending. But have a category 5 hurricane roaring down the pike and it's...
"Well honey, think we should bother to evacuate"?

Probably why I hate it. I hate the heat.

As I always say, when your hot you can only take so many clothes off. If your cold you can always add more layers lol

100% true, but... you just don't need to wear that many clothes in Florida.
Your clothes get dirty, you don't need a washer and dryer. Take the clothes to the beach, swish them around in the salt water for a bit, and drape them over a bush to dry.


I hate heat too. But near the beach, the humidity is always pretty low, and there's usually a nice breeze off the ocean.
And... you can just jump in the ocean every now and then.

Now if you need to wear a suit and tie for work... then Florida is probably not the place to set up shop.

Things you absolutely can't do without in Florida...

1. Bathing suit and towel (see Hitchhiker's Guide)
2. Suntan lotion and sunblock.
3. Fresh water source, man made or natural (and Pina Coladas ofc).
4. Some fold-able patio furniture.
5. Fishing rod and golf clubs.
6. Small machete for getting and opening coconuts, and self defense.
7. Grocery cart, for carrying around, all your really important possessions.

I think that covers it.
