Hynix Gold P31 2TB Update

A rather delayed update about this, as first mentioned in the thread linked below After one of those years (ill health and other things). But I have now installed the Hynix P31 2TB in a laptop and posted below the Crystal Disk Info that was requested by @Scannerman . Although no doubt this is now ancient history and someone has already done it! This is just what came up on Crystal Disk info - is there anything I'm supposed to do/run?

In use it feels nice - although web pages seem to open fractionally slower than on my other laptop with the Samsung 970 Evo plus. Maybe 2.5 to 3 seconds instead of 2 to 2.5 seconds. Both laptops are near identical models. One is Core i51035G1 the other is Core i5 1035G4 - if that makes a difference. And both have 16gb ram.

I wasn't impressed with the manager software - because it failed twice so I don't have it yet! It was a 24mb ish download that was apparently going to take 25 minutes - very tedious. And both times the download failed after 20 minutes. So I haven't bothered with that right now. Apparently there are no firmware updates for the 2TB drive. I have about 200mbs internet speed and other programs downloaded in seconds (googling - it seems this is a common problem - the downloads being very slow and failing part way through).

It's supposed to run a bit cooler than the Samsung 970 plus - the warmth on the back doesn't seem hugely different but time will tell. Neither are hot, just warm.

I just downloaded the latest Drivemanager and Firmware without issue. However attempting to download the firmware update manual seems to have issues. It downloads but doesn't display anything and even says it's not a PDF or damaged. I've never used a Hynix drive so unsure or anything else. I will point out however the P31 Gold is just a PCIe 3.0 drive which is the same as the 970 EVO Plus you replaced it with. In general I wouldn't expect any better performance out of the P31 vs the 970 EVO Plus.

It draws less power and is more efficient than the 970 evo plus. Mainly because it uses only 4 channels. In the 50gb file test hynix scored 305MBps per watt , miles ahead of samsung 133MBps per watt. It only draws 3 watts at peak load.

You might not be aware of much difference doing general pottering about. When they are working hard, particularly over a long period the hynix should be cooler and use up less battery life.

They are in demand so they are not cheap. If you got a deal you did well.

Hi @Hazel123 in Crystal Disk Info if you select Function>Advanced Feature>Raw Values and select 10 [dec] it'll convert the Raw
Values into standard numbers.

Thanks. I thought I was supposed to do something more with the program Off to do that now.

The unsafe shutdowns were because I needed to install a new graphics driver - it's ok now.

Most of mine are because of power outages. I really need to get a UPS.

I have a UPS on every main work station in my basement but one. Recently the power company were making some upgrades in our town and this resulted in some power surges. Sure enough, that one that did not run on a UPS, despite running on a power bar with "surge protection" was compromised. All the other units run just fine. I cannot stress the importance of a UPS enough. I'm slowly mending back the failed drives for my daughter but it's a real PITA and I only have myself to blame because I know better than to take my chances with a power bar.

Hazel, thank you for sharing. Your read and write speeds look great and 36° C is an excellent temp for that NVMe. It would seem that all the raves about this unit/model are true. I appreciate you getting back to me on this. You have some superb storage there. Good to see Hynix pulling up the lead!

I had to look up a UPS - I only have surge protector power strips. However the one upstairs is quite old and I did lose a laptop after it was plugged into that - during a thunderstorm. It was stupid of me to leave it plugged in during a thunderstorm, but clearly these surge protector power strips don't last forever and I hadn't checked it for a long time. The ones downstairs are good ones, but I think need replacing about every 5 years.

Still don't quite understand how a UPS helps if it only provides power for 3 to 5 minutes and where is it installed/what does it look like?

A good UPS is a solitary unit that plugs into the wall and uses batteries. It's heavy and looks like a small desk top PC. Generally it sits under your desk. Your PC and monitor power cables (the ones you would plug into your power strip) plug into the back of the UPS. Depending on the quality and model of the UPS you get anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes to properly shut down your PC (in the dark when everything else is out but your PC is working fine). My wife has 32 minutes on hers. So it really depends on what sort of UPS you purchase. It is essentially a battery backup and the power your PC is using is generally much cleaner (less spikes) than what you get from your wall outlet.

My pleasure. Unless your PC has a PSU using more than 800 watts the UPS in the link I shared will provide you with more than enough power to let you shut down your PC in the middle of a power failure safely.

*edit* Where I live a UPS is not a luxury. It's a necessity. We had a power failure not even 24 hours ago that put most of the Province out of commission. Fortunately we were able to safely shut down all of our PCs but one. Guess which one... Yup. The one that I was working on due to the last power failure we had. You know, the one that wasn't plugged into a UPS?
