Hi HYPER-V Gurus

How can I use a physical disk as a "RAW physical disk" not a "Virtual Hard disk".
I know how to do it for USB devices but these are internal HDD's

What I'm trying to do is create on W11 under HYPER-V either a Fedora or an Arch Linux VM which has 2 RAID 0 arrays each with 2 HDD's in the array as I currently have :

e.g

so 1 array /dev/md126 of 9.1 TB and another /dev/md127 of 10.9 TB. I then want to see if the shared stuff on the "to be created" VM can be accessed remotely.
The RAID 0 arrays are formatted with Linux xfs so I need the VM to access physical devices with the native file system, not as "Virtual Hard Disks.
Easily done in VMWare but performance is a mega pain !!!!".

Thanks

Cheers

You can select a physical drive instead of a VHD to access but the drive has to be put offline from disk management.

A key restriction is the drive cannot the physical drive containing the OS (C drive).

Also, the selected drive has to be a complete drive, not just a partition.

Hi there

That's fine -- thanks for the info -- makes perfect sense -- especially using RAID with non Windows File systems on them (xfs)
currently . The OS drive will be totally separate from the RAID devices. I'm using RAID 0 for speed plus on Linux software RAID (ensure mdadm is installed for software RAID) does not require HDD's to be the same size - and whole disks can be used -- I have backup so loss of data isn't an issue -- risk in using RAID 0 is grossly over exaggerated with modern HDD's -- in about 4 years of using this I've only lost data once and that was by "User Error" rather than hardware failure - although of course HDD's can and do fail.

I'll have a go with this -- if this works I can finally start getting rid of SMB1 -- a VM should be able to use later SMB protocols without issue. Remote TV's and amazon firesticks have no probs and installing latest version of KODI on firestick (rel 19.xx) also has settings later than SMB1 for accessing shared multi-media content. Running a Linux VM on HYPER-V should be fine - especially as I only need it in Command mode (no GUI required) -- and can SSH into the CLI when required.
