I have win 11 pro.
There is print screen button in my dell desktop.
But if i just press pr sc and then open paint, the paste menu is greyed.
In windows 7, there was no problem, and i could easily paste it for sharing or upload purpose.
what I am doing wrong. Why it is not working.
I even tried, prsc control c and then control v.
Instead of the photo, the snipping tool bar is showing in the paint.
Just say, is there a bug in my paint app.
or do i miss something

I'd try pasting into some other program.
If it pastes into another program, then you'll know that it's not a Clipboard or keyboard problem.

Try Paint 3D, for example.

The command that captures the screen to the clipboard is windows key + print screen.

I verified that it works.

Thanks to Google.

(I almost never want a whole screen. I use shift + winkey :win: + S to select a rectangular area.)

Hi, Ghot, how do i check if my pr sc button is working.

Try a different program, like XnView.

When I take a screenshot... I just hit the PrtSc key, and it saves whatever is on my screen to the clipboard.
Might be different on a laptop. I don't do laptops.
Then I open any image editor and click on Edit > Paste

The only image editing programs I use are Paintshop Pro 7 and XnView Classic.

/edit

If you want any of the early Paintshop Pros...

They don't have the steep learning curve of programs like GIMP or Photoshop.
But they do just about everything.

I have just tried both ways, open paint, click desktop to loose focus on paint, press PrtScn button. In paint click down arrow below clipboard icon, choose paste, it works also just pressing CTRL V pastes the clipboard image in as well.
Do you have any keyboard customisation software running? Any Dell specific language/ keyboard apps?

Yes, it's often the way that keys on a keyboard with a Fn key have two uses.

On my Dell laptop the PrtSc key is also the F10 key. Usually the Fn key has coloured text. The dual-function keys have both functions printed on them, the one invoked with the Fn key being the same ccolour as the Fn key.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

@Ghot
What's the difference between XnView Classic and XnView MP

I have no idea.
I've always used Classic, so I've never seen a reason to try MP.
For all I know, MP might give a $100 every time you open it. LOL

Classic (Minimal) has always done everything I needed, and then some.

If I get the option, I always choose the older, smaller program version.

Just about every time they start adding things to a program... it gets messed up.

Comparison. Scroll through the whole list...

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I do a lot of screen captures so settled on using a free program called Greenshot. I configured it so all screenshots are automatically saved to a particular folder. That saved me the time of having to paste each screenshot individually. The keyboard shortcuts I use for it are:
Capture full screen = Control + Prnt scrn
Capture window = Alt + Prnt scrn
Capture region = Prnt scrn
