Hello.
I couldn't switch to Windows 11 because my processor it’s a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7200U CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.71 GHz.
Do you think that in the future this sort of processors should be able to support Windows 11 ? And when, if it’s the case ?

Technically, you can do it now. There are quite a few work arounds...

No, they physically do not support the security technology Microsoft is using in the operating system. I think that processor is going to be forever unsupported. As others have said, you can still load Windows on it, but whether it will always be suitable for future updates or whether it will get Windows updates is yet to be seen.

I have seen no hard information, but I assume that MS will never support CPUs that aren't currently on the supported list (or newer).

Some MS people have suggested that they may not continue to offer software updates on unsupported systems. I believe that all updates have been provided so far.

If I had to guess, MS will continue the updates.

I have 11 installed on an inexpensive laptop that meets all requirements, save that it has a Gen6 CPU. So far, I've been updating the OS manually, so I can't say whether it'd receive Windows Updates. Currently, it's on 22621.675 (RP release). I hope that it receives the next release update; I'll try to avoid a visit to uupdump.net before that.

My processor is Intel Core i5 5200U @ 2.20GHz and the laptop has incompatible hardware and I installed Win 11 on it and just updated to 22H2 using Rufus, which automatically takes care of the changes needed to bypass and compatibility check. So I'm confident you can upgrade to Win11. And I'm still getting updates through the normal Windows Update app in Settings.

Microsoft has unofficially grandfathered in processors that support TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. PCs in such a state are partially supported.

If you bypass compatibility check to install Windows 11 on unsupported computer, then you can install all other updates except a new version upgrade. To upgrade to a newer version you must manually download the latest ISO, mount it, load Setup but replace a specific file and disconnect from the internet before proceeding. It's all described at the above mentioned thread.

Is Microsoft cracking down on Windows 11 updates for unsupported hardware?

You just checked Windows Update, but the latest Windows 11 feature update isn't showing up. Does that mean Microsoft is cutting off updates to incompatible hardware? I did some testing.

No, the requirement for 8th gen or later won't change.

It's a little more complex than that. Intel 8th gen and higher (and the AMD equivalents) natively support the security functions used by things like Core Isolation. 7th gen and earlier can emulate them, but with a consequential performance hit. That was one of the reasons MS gave for setting the bar at 8th gen.

As others have said, you can use workarounds to install 11 on almost anything. My System Two is running 11 on a 1st gen i5.
