Solved I got some confusion related to Windows 11

Hello everyone

I am looking forward for the new windows 11 but I am kind of confuse with the new requirements from the microsoft health check saying that my CPU is unsupported, the CPU being an I7 6700K. but I got TPM 2.0 was not that the important requirements for it ? Will I run into issues like not getting update or other things ? Id like not to bother with workaround to get it running smooth .... And id really like a fresh new windows I have been using Win 10 LTSC for 3 good years and everything work like a charm one big minus being the fact I cant use game pass on it anymore...

i7-6700K is not supported in Windows 11, you need TPM, Secure boot and a supported CPU, all important I'm afraid.
It's unknown what exactly will happen after Win11 is released regarding if you can install on an unsupported CPU not and what Microsoft may or may not enforce regarding updates.
There are a lot of rumours, speculation and some confusion created by certain web sites claiming to have info from Microsoft which is unverifiable.
There are various work rounds that can currently install Win11 on unsupported hardware but it might be a good idea to wait until after the 5th, which is only a few days away and see how those with unsupported CPUs have got on.
Whatever you decide make sure you have a backup system image done with Macrium Reflect or similar so you can revert to 10 without loosing everything if anything goes wrong.

I'm leaving my i7-6700K rig on 10 as I have other PCs that are compliant.

The cynic in me thinks they may relent on some requirements once their partners sell enough new computers. But that's a long shot and I doubt it.

Yep... it's almost certainly OEM motivated... not that, that is gonna stop us from installing on non-compliant CPU-machines..

Excellent post , just want to add that the "reason" many are finding a way around the full requirements (mainly CPU) is because Microsoft is currently allowing unsupported CPU's in the beta/test program.

The big bet is that Microsoft will discontinue allowing unsupported 6 & 7th gen CPU's once the official RTM releases October 5th. I too am running Windows 11 on both a desktop running an i7-7700K CPU, and a laptop running an i7-7600U CPU. Both support TPM 2.0, but I suspect the CPU's will not be supported come release day

Skuttlebutt is that microsoft will warn if a system fails the Processor check during install but will not abort the install. the installer will recommend that the system is reverted to Windows 10, and if ignored microsoft will not support the install, including updates, even the essential security updates

We shall see if this is true shortly, I would advise anyone who receives the warning from the RTM installer should back out or ensure they have a workable backup of their Windows 10 install before continuing

BTW, as a reminder of the Windows 11 requirements, there's also the GPU - a DirectX 12 card running a WDDM 2.0 driver.

• Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)
• RAM: 4 gigabyte (GB)
• Storage: 64 GB or larger storage device
• System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable
• TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
• Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver
• Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel

If things stay where they are, I'm going to have to revert both my backup desktop and main laptop back to Windows 10. Main desktop is fully supported, just waiting for the RTM ISO for a clean install.

Hmmm.. I hope everybody has a recent backup Tuesday... it's a non-negotiable.

Currently I have Windows 11 running well on a 1st gen i5, System Two in My Computers below.

I intend to keep it running 11 after the release, just so I can see first hand what (if anything) MS may do to restrict its use on unsupported hardware. Until the release, all we can do is guess....

But even after that Bree, what has MS divulged in terms of older CPU's being compromised with Win 11? So they obviously do not have certain instructions but what makes them so vulnerable or whatever... I fail to understand the logic.

I believe it's more likely the major microsoft customers - enterprises, multi nationals, government, health, education, armed forces Etc (maybe including some OEMs) who are pushing for the security side at least of the "requirements"

I could see the processor requirements being more flexible for two reasons, the lower rated older processors have proved in the Beta testing to work more efficiently than was envisaged, and also a more cynical reason, that the major customers noted above, who are the Cash Cow for Microsoft are not known for running the latest hardware, just to suit software requirements

I have made the decision to hold off on updating to Windows 11 on my two systems My desktop and laptop, as I am currently in the process of assessing the latest batch of Image editing software, several of which are releasing major updates in the near future, and I do not want a new OS blurring the lines of the assessment.

"Unfortunately" I am on the Windows Release preview channel on both the systems so I have to keep declining Microsoft's kind offer to install Windows 11 which I have been getting for a week or so - I will grab an installer of the RTM when it drops to run in a Windows to Go install to check it with my hardware but will fully update early 2022

Yeah that's pretty astute

BTW.. dunno why MS drops zero-day patches that has not been Insider tested ... apparently there will be one (.252 or something)

My guess would be an insllation/update bug.

I Gave up trying to understand Microsoft's thought process when they released Windows Millennium Edition, :)
