I have a Samsung T7 2TB SSD permanently attached to my PC

I have been advised by Samsung to safely remove the drive before unplugging it, would this also apply to switching off my PC? I just tried to safely remove it but it told me it was in use, I closed all file managers, started task Manager but could see no programme that could be using the drive so I could not safely remove it, will I damage the drive by turning off my PC

You only need to do that for external drives such as SSDs and usb sticks. You don't need to do it when shutting down as Windows does that for you.

That message has been buggin me for years too. And I am pretty upset that MS still hasn't fixed it, eg by giving a hint about which process or file handle still keeps the disk locked. I guess there are tools available for analsis, if anyone here can recommend one?

(btw of course I know that every disk can be set to "safely remove" via it's properties)

It is an external drive.
Personally only ever had an HDD externally connected and it was for a about 6 months, It just powered off with the PC, i never done the remove USB safely thiing. Hey the external HD is still going 7 years after this. Id expect the SSD to be fine without doing it everytime.

Good question! I, too, can't get my drives to safely remove. So, I unsafely remove my external SSD constantly because I have only 1 USB-C port on the back of my computer. I ought to by a USB-C card to have more access points, but I just don't feel like unplugging the 40 million cables I have running into my system! (Yeah, I'm pretty lazy like that! :() Anyway, It's probably doing something harmful to my drive, but I've never noticed.

If any program is accessing your external drive, you would get a warning when you tried to shut down your computer.

Like others have said, I get the warning but have never had any issues with drives after unplugging them, "Safely" or not.

This may have nothing to do with anything, but I use voidtools's Everything search tool and I find that sometimes I need to shut it down to "safely remove" a USB drive since Everything has indexed a file on that drive.

Good question! I, too, can't get my drives to safely remove. So, I unsafely remove my external SSD constantly because I have only 1 USB-C port on the back of my computer. I ought to by a USB-C card to have more access points, but I just don't feel like unplugging the 40 million cables I have running into my system! (Yeah, I'm pretty lazy like that! :() Anyway, It's probably doing something harmful to my drive, but I've never noticed.I was concerned as these drives are very expensive AU$ 550.00. I would hate hate for Samsung to tell me I have breached the warranty. Thank you all fo your suggestions.

This will be interesting to look into on Friday when I receive my Samsung T7s that I just purchased. I'm upgrading from using external HDDs as my backups, and have used a Lian Li external enclosure with them up until now that has a power switch so I've never had the Safely Remove Hardware problem with it, or with thumbdrives for that matter though. I'll update in this thread on Friday.

I have found using HWInfo64 "cures" this issue, on starting the app it states the steps it goes through, one of these is "flushing buffers", once the app loads, close it and as if by magic the disk that was in use and couldn't be safe removed, now can be.
Pretty sure there used to be a DOS command to flush disk buffers, not sure if there is still that function in Windows command com, but if there is maybe that would also work?

Received my Samsung T7s today and just ran a Macrium backup on System 1 (System 2 coming up) then afterwards used Windows' Safe to remove hardware and had no problems as the OP described; sorry can't be of more help.

Edit: System 2 did not give any problems regarding the Safe to remove operation either. Perhaps next time though knowing these usually uncooperative machines.

I have found using HWInfo64 "cures" this issue, on starting the app it states the steps it goes through, one of these is "flushing buffers", once the app loads, close it and as if by magic the disk that was in use and couldn't be safe removed, now can be.
Pretty sure there used to be a DOS command to flush disk buffers, not sure if there is still that function in Windows command com, but if there is maybe that would also work?
Interesting tip. We all get that annoyance from time to time.

I just tried to safely remove it but it told me it was in use, I closed all file managers, started task Manager but could see no programme that could be using the drive...
I get that sometimes. I find that most times If I sign out, then sign back in again, whatever process was using the drive has been closed and I can now eject the drive safely.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October.

I just tried the hwinfo64. Didnt solve it for me and neither does logging out. They are set up as hotswap, so more often than not can they be ejected but sometimes they cant. Very annoying.

Have you tried ProEject? I have tested it and it worked ok for me. It is a portable app so it doesn't have to be installed. To use just click on ProEject.exe file. then click on the USB drive and hit enter. One thing I don't understand is that it shows my internal C: and D: drives. I'm not going to click on them to see what happens.
