I am highly pi$$ed off so this is a vent more than a question. You folks happen to be the only ones I can vent to.

Three times in the last two weeks I have assisted people who have purchased new computers. The reason I am so angry is, it was under my suggestion that these folks bought new systems in the first place so naturally I feel responsible for the mess they got into.

Now, when one uses a MS account, (which MS pushes on the users when they create their accounts), the creation of the account automatically make the user folders location default to Onedrive rather than the C:\users folder. There is no notice to the user that it is being done. In two of these cases when they moved their files from their old computers into the new one, they had more data than the 5gb of free Onedrive storage. In all 3 cases, the purchaser did NOT want to use Onedrive at all.

Naturally, this has put these people in a tailspin of not knowing what to do to resolve this issue. Yes, I know how to straighten this mess out, but the normal person does not. Many of them are not proficient enough to resolve it. It is atrocious for MS to force Onedrive on unsuspecting new buyers and we all know how difficult it is to use a local account during setup. The same situation goes for Office 365 buyers. Most have no idea the files they create in 365 are not stored on their computers by default.

There are so many reasons this new way of creating accounts creates a terrible situation. As Windows 11 evolves, more and more control of our data is taken away from the user and people do not even know it.

Can someone give me a valid reason why MS has made such a terrible decision?

A couple of things come to mind, one is the SaaS/Software as a Service and another is Cloud Computing. Implementing both may bring up Diskless Workstations. My first foray into computers was in the late '80s when my work was changing from WU Model 28 Teletypes to Dumb Terminals [monitor and keyboard] connecting to a Super Computer W of Kansas City, KS, near Olathe, KS for data transfer, access and storage.

Re. onedrive - this is not the case. During oobe you get option to only save files to this pc.
Maybe rather understated but it is there.

MS is headed in one of two directions... maybe even both.

One being pay to play, aka, Windows as a subscription service.
Two, being no install at all, just access to Windows on their servers.

Either way, I can see a future where it's just like... cable TV.
A monthly charge (that keeps growing), and no real control over any part of it.

From Microsoft's viewpoint, they can get rid of their tech support folks (except for those solely in-house), and they gain complete control over the OS we only access remotely.

From their standpoint, they save a ton of money in labor costs, and they can charge... pretty much whatever they want.
It's a win-win for them.

It's a business model that seriously appeals to corporations of all types.
The only way to stop or delay it... is to "just say no".

Take DLC for video games. Back in the early 2000's we "could" have... "just said no", but we liked the convenience.
Now... we're paying so much more than we thought, to acquire Chapter 1 of a game... 27 more chapters to come.

Back in the 70's, we could have "just said no" to the cable companies. But we liked the convenience.
They "promised" that if we paid a small monthly fee, they wouldn't have to air commercials.
Well... you can see how that turned out.

NOW is the time to "just say no" to MS. Refuse Office 365, refuse to use OneDrive or Microsoft accounts... etc.
Now... the power is still in your hands, if only feebly.

In 10 years it'll be way past too late, to do anything about it.

Now THAT is how to do a "rant". :D

Not only has one drive taken over your data, but if you delete something from OneDrive it also gets deleted from your data drive. At least that's what I'm told when I delete something from OneDrive .

I think what Microsoft is doing is making the free or low cost experience so intolerable that people will then pay more to be able to opt out of it. It's the same business model that Tesla is moving towards. Oh sure, we'll sell you an electric car with a 350 mile range capacity. But we are going to cap it at 250 miles unless you pay us the fee to unlock the last 100 miles. If you want to use Windows 100% independent of a Microsoft Account and Onedrive, then you will need to pay extra for it. And they will gradually close loopholes and workarounds until users are forced to pay extra for those options.

Bingo. So that is what caused it. By the time they called me the damage was already done.
Another one of those tiny lettered options and a user who goes click, click, click. Just like they do when they install software
when they end up with PUPs.
Thank you Cereberus.

Yes, that's how OneDrive works. It is a real-time mirror of everything in your local OneDrive folder. I'm a longtime OneDrive user and I understand and love how it works. I keep all my data and photos in my OneDrive folder. I have a Microsoft 365 subscription for $69/yr that gives me all of Microsoft Office and 1 Terabyte of cloud OneDrive storage.

My backup system:
1. OneDrive real-time mirror of all data
2. Microsoft File History on portable 2TB Samsung T7 SSDs.
3. Macrium Reflect full drive images.

Ghot-man, you are a ranter extraordinaire. I agree with everything you wrote. The writing has been on the wall since 2015 of what direction MS is going. With each release, they pull their crap a little bit at a time rather than all at once. It's no wonder more people who want to keep control of their computers are choosing Linux.
Adding to all you said, I believe MS will be in cahoots with the manufacturers and before too long we will see secure boot hard coded into the uefi bios. Anyone who doesn't want to buy into their new 'model' will be forced to build their own.

The masses who are really going to be culture shocked is the generation behind mine, the not-geeks but who know enough to get by. The young ones won't have a problem with it. I'm going to start saying a little prayer every night that it will take MS longer than the few years I have left before it comes to pass. I know I have to die, but I'll be damned if I want MS to be the one who takes me out when their shenanigans make me so mad I have a stroke. My husband has reserved that honor.

I know I have to die, but I'll be damned if I want MS to be the one who takes me out when their shenanigans make me so mad I have a stroke. My husband has reserved that honor.
My wife has managed to keep me around for 62 years picking up after her but while she's gone on 4-day quilting retreats I manage a little sanity.

I can't tell you why MS does what they do, I can simply suggest working around it :-).

I use a minimal unattended answer file to install Windows. It doesn't actually perform a complete unattended installation of Windows. Pretty much the ONLY thing that it does is create a local user account to bypass the Windows 11 22H2 behavior of insisting on creating an MS account.

If you so choose, you can then later logon with an MS account if you wish, but are under no obligation to do so. This also allows you to bypass the OneDrive nonsense.

glasskuter,

are you saying that all the user profile is created under C:\Onedrive and not under C:\Users\Name?
How do we move the user profile (and all data) back to C:\Users\Name?

I'm sure all those National security agencies has free access to the Onedrive servers.
It's getting difficult to have Private data. And I'm sure it is not only under Windows

One being pay to play, aka, Windows as a subscription service.
Mike,

False allegations of that were around when Windows 10 was being introduced.
Advertising-funded blogs made the false claims to generate controversy, bolster their visits & increase their revenue.

This isn't an opinion I dragged from the web... this is my opinion.
After 20 years of buy once and use, OFFICE... now there's a subscription Office.

Looks like pay to play to me. :-)

We even have an MS store built into Windows now.

@Megahertz I just explained how in my post to another user's thread HERE. It's quite a lengthy post so I hope it's not hard to follow. Note that this issue is not present if you upgraded to 11, or at least I have not encountered it in upgrades yet.

I Told you

It's a matter of people not paying attention to what is being written on their screens, coupled with people not being educated on which choices to make depending upon what they want, coupled with users' absolute apathy when it comes to learning about their own computers. This is not necessarily the end users' faults, though - for a long, long, very long time companies have foisted the *easy* solution onto users to get them up and running more quickly, to doing the tasks they want to and not having to worry about the back end of things - the complicated side of computers. Experienced users know that that prompt (which has been there for a long time now) has changed its look over time, from offering to use OneDrive to now offering to do local files only. SaaS and subscription models are something we screamed about in the 8F and 10F sites, and it's only getting worse in terms of privacy - but better in terms of security, or so they say.

My advice to you @glasskuter - next time offer to sit down with the user and walk them through setting the machine up. You'll then have a good idea of what exactly a new user running an OEM device has to go through, and be ready for fore-warnings about things like this.
