I want to go back to my previous installation of Windows 11. I have a folder called Windows.old, but there is no option under Settings..Recovery for 'Go Back'
How do I use the folder to revert to an older system. I only installed a new image today.

I think the 'Go back' only applies if you want to 'Go back' to Windows 10 after upgrading to Windows 11 via the Feature Update process and even then you only have 10 days grace period to do so. After this time the 'Go back' will be inactive (greyed out).
The 'Roll back' does not apply if you upgraded by installing Win 11 from an image.

In your case the Windows.old folder seems to be a left-over that should have been deleted automatically after the 10-day grace period ended. You can remove the Windows.old folder by running Disk Cleanup command and then selecting 'Clean up system files' option. Do not delete it yourself.

I had used a Win 11 iso to create a bootable USB which I used to do a clean install of Win 11. The Windows.old folder was created today. I need to roll back. There must be a way. I know how to delete it with Disk Clean-up but that is not what I want to do! :-)

There may be way but not via the 'Go back' option. I know hindsight is 100% but if only you had created an image before the clean install you could have reverted back using that.

I hope someone else can help you. Good luck. :-)

I needed space on my external USB hard drive so I decided to delate all but the two, most-recent backups. But apparently I deleted all but the two oldest backups, dated October I'll use one if I can't rollback to this morning's version.

I always create an image with Macrium Reflect before doing any changes, and do an image weekly, I also use Aomei to do a file and folder backup. Macrium has saved me many times in the past

I want to go back to my previous installation of Windows 11. I have a folder called Windows.old, but there is no option under Settings..Recovery for 'Go Back'

I had used a Win 11 iso to create a bootable USB which I used to do a clean install of Win 11. The Windows.old folder was created today.
How precisely did you do a clean install? If you booted from the usb to do the install then there is no way back. A Windows.old folder made in this way is only there for you retrieve your old files and documents.

Going back to the previous version is only an option after an in-place upgrade. And the only way to start an in-place upgrade is to run Setup.exe from your USB or the mounted ISO from within your existing Windows.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. Saves putting all my eggs in one basket as the saying goes. I doubt very much if Macrium would let me down , so just being extra careful

I found DISM rarely sorts out problems along with sfc. I also find creating a restore point as being pretty useless when I tried it

OK, sorry, some on-topic words now. I have read more than once that you can beneficially run sfc and dism commands multiple times or alternatingly, even if nothing was found, if '... but could not repair' is being reported, etc.

Further, Logs of Macrium Reflect can be used as a diagnostic tool even if creating the image is reported as being successful > click on 'Events' > select a time range to list events.

Some time ago, I had an ESENT xxx event in that list that made me run the Windows Hardware and Device diagnostics tool but all it did was update device drivers (after a restart)

Macrium Reflect Logs still lists events but they are all so insignificant that I do nothing about them. It just amazes me how exacting Macrium Reflect works.

In any case, that list of events may be helpful to you.

No need to upgrade, the free version of Macrium Reflect has the Logs feature including the list of events.
