I rarely use incremental backups any more.

OS
Windows 11 Pro + Win11 Canary VM.
Since I upgraded my laptop, it full backs up my OS + apps C drive (around 50 GB) in 1 minute to my NVME drive using Macrium Reflect Home.

I only ever keep last 3 backups to save space.

I find incrementals now save hardly any time anymore, so I have pretty much stopped using them.

For reasons I cannot fully explain, Macrium Reflect Home now backups much faster than any other package I have recently tested on new laptop (Hasleo, Aomei, Easeus) which take around 2+ minutes.

As an aside, I double checked the MRH backup was sound using Macrium Viboot.

I think the reason MRH backups are much faster is because my more powerful I9 CPU handles the MRH multithreading much better (free version does not have multi-threading). I do not know if the other packages use multi-threading.

    …still on a horse.
I considered doing only full backups, but I've finally settled on a different approach.

I like the granularity of daily backups and I like to keep my backups for a longer period of time. One reason for this is that I once discovered that some files were missing but I only found out after they were gone for over 3 months. So, here is my scheme:

Do a full backup every Sunday. Every other day of the week I do an incremental backup.

I keep full backups for a period of 6 months but I only keep incremental backups for 3 months. As a result, I have the granularity of daily backups out to 3 months, but after 3 months I have only the weekly backups.

I also have a file and folder backup that I perform, and I use the same scheme for that backup.

Finally, I also duplicate the same files that are included in the file and folder backups to multiple other systems every day. On one of those systems any files that are altered and backed up as archived copies.

An interesting question. It would be very interesting to have a definite answer. I have the Free version and quicker backups due to multi-threading would be a reason to buy the paid-for version. I have held off paying due to the £58 cost, which I consider too high.

Since doing a clean install of Windows 11 24H2 (& MR), my full system backup takes about 60% LESS time than on my previous build, which was 23H2 => 24H2 + all the RP updates. My restores also takes less time; again about 60%.

I've only ever done full backups, even as far back as the XP days.
I also manually export my bookmarks to my storage drive, after I've added a few.
I use MR (paid).

For things like games that have their save file in... Documents, I use Karen's Replicator to copy those to a storage drive.
I also use Karens to copy my "working" storage drive to my storage-storage drive...

Well, I copy the OS BckUps (G:) to OS BckUps (K:), manually.
On G: I only keep the newest W10 and W11 backups.
On K: I keep about 3 months worth of backups... just in case. :-)

I do a full backup on Sunday morning, followed by daily Incrementals.
If I'm doing an update or installing a new driver I do another incremental.
Incrementals take less space than full backups - less wear on the NVMe drive fi you're not backing up 50GB every time

I keep the previous week's backup

I think the reason MRH backups are much faster is because my more powerful I9 CPU handles the MRH multithreading much better (free version does not have multi-threading). I do not know if the other packages use multi-threading.
I have done some reasonable testing with both REFLECT and the HASLEO BACKUP SUITE (both use multi-core/thread operations) in these areas. Both extensive multi-core/thread CPUs and SSD Source/Target storage devices (especially NvME) make a huge difference, not only in backup time in general, but also when you use different compressions during the process.

Using an i7 10th gen CPU (16-threads) and a NvME source/target pair, Hasleo, at MEDIUM compression, will use 12-threads at 60% each to do a 50gB OS partition FULL image. If I up the compression to HIGH, the process will bury all 16-threads at 100%. REFLECT indicates a very similar use of the processor and the higher speed SSDs.

It's clear that the high speed DATA paths make a huge difference in the process in general, but adding a reasonable amount of cores/threads to the process will bump things way up if using a multi-threaded application. Not all imaging processes are multi-threaded, though... depends on their design. You're i9 will definitely have an appreciable effect on the REFLECT process you describe.

An interesting question. It would be very interesting to have a definite answer. I have the Free version and quicker backups due to multi-threading would be a reason to buy the paid-for version. I have held off paying due to the £58 cost, which I consider too high.
If you have a good SSD based storage System (SOURCE and TARGET must be physically different devices or device queues will get full and possibly limit the bandwidth of those SSDs) AND a reasonable amount of cores/threads, the multi-threaded version of REFLECT should help quite a bit. And for a small tease...

...the new REFLECT v10(X) on the horizon will use a new streaming storage method that should DOUBLE the speed of the existing imaging processes (assuming you've got the other hardware components up to speed <cores/threads & solid state disks).

Whether its all worth it to you... YMMV. :-)

Ive always seen the backup debate, I've never backed up in my life, and i've never needed to, Ive never had a situation where i've went ahh crap i shoulda made a backup, over 10-15 years. What are people doing to the pc's that they need to manually backup everything every day? Is there 20 years worth of lottery winning ticket numbers on there? Government secrets?, Lots of user mistakes? Learning?

FYI im not an important person so maybe thats it, Everything i have i can get back in an hour, Lets say i lost the lot. The thought of losing the hour is terrifying

I have just done a test with free version and paid version backing up exactly same partitions with both set to top priority. There was a big difference for me:

Backing up circa 50 GB:

Free Version - 3 minutes 03 seconds

Paid Version - 1 minute 02 seconds.

Of course, I cannot guarantee you will get same performance but you can install trial version to test the difference (backup the free version installer). It will depend on factors like CPU speed, RAM, Hard drive type

MIn is 13th Gen I9, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB NVME - it is roughly in 60th quartile according to passmark i.e. slightly higher than overall middle for performance (laptops rarely go above 80th quartile).

I have a copy of free installer here on onedrive if necessary ReflectDLHF (V8.0 Free).exe . I used it today to do the test so it still works.

YMMV. :-)
Interestingly, I am not getting as fast a backup on Hasleo as I would have expected - I do not know why. It clocks in at around 2 mins.

I look forward to V10 of reflect but although I have 5 V8 licences (1 + 4 pack), I shall probably only update the single licence. I hardly use my other devices and maybe backup once two months at best. It just does not make economic sense to upgrade the 4 pack licences to save maybe 30 seconds 6 times a year.

Of course, I backup much more frequently on my main laptop, so having one licence is ok (provided cost is not prohibitive). If they change to a lease only model, then I doubt will upgrade at all.

I have a weekly full backup and daily differential backups as they are easier to revert to than a series of incremental backups.

A DATA point if interested... the test I ran recently (last week for another thread elsewhere), had a 49.9gB OS partition full image on REFLECT (25.3-sec) and HASLEO (27.2-sec) run at MEDIUM compression... the HIGH compression was almost identical (1-sec difference at about 24-sec). This was done on a 10th gen i7 running 16-threads, runnning from different SOURCE and TARGET NvMEs.

For me, these days it would be pictures, videos, documents that I have created as well as any licensed software and associated keys. Years ago, it would have also included things like email, bookmarks and music.

I don't backup daily, I backup every couple of months. My data is mostly on OneDrive these days, so it's on my PC as well as in the cloud. My email is all in Gmail. My music is all pretty much in Amazon Music, and my bookmarks are all in my Google account. All of my pics and videos from my phone always goes to OneDrive directly, so if my phone is lost, stolen, damaged or misplaced, I don't lose anything.

I've never actually had to restore my actual workstation from a backup. I have however restored test machines that i use exclusively to test different scenarios, operating systems, etc.

I just backup my user profile, and my photography drive using Acronis. It's auto set for weekly backups, so it's mainly set and forget. If I need a backup sooner, I simply click backup now and it's done.

I actually prefer clean installs as opposed to imaging and why I don't use them, but that's me. I just restore the data I need from a backup and go from there. I know everyone has their preferred way; this is mine.

Anyway, I'm setup for incremental backups, but I suppose I don't need given my use case. But it just takes one time, and you wish you did, so....

I follow the widely embraced 3-2-1 backup strategy.

3 copies of my data
2 different backup technologies
1 copy must always be offsite

I'm self-employed, work from home, and my data is vitally important to me.

Every evening I make two Macrium Reflect images on two 4TB Samsung Portable SSD's each containing 7 rotating daily images. The SSD's are only connected for the short time it takes to make an image which is currently averaging only 5 minutes. I make the images while I am working in the evening.

I work entirely from my local 1 Terabyte C: Drive and all my data and photos are kept in my OneDrive folder. I'm a Microsoft 365 subscriber which includes 1 Terabyte of OneDrive cloud storage. I have OneDrive set to mirror my local OneDrive folder, thus I always have all my work backed up throughout the day in real-time as I work. This is very important to me. I don't ever want to lose anything I'm working on.

That's it. 321. Three separate copies of my data using Two different technologies. One copy is always offsite in cloud OneDrive and updated in real-time.
