Thoughts on Windows 11

If they are the new type High res images there is an addon available for Windows 10 that adds the function to read the files, there may be a version for Windows 11 or the original may work

iPhones were never really supported by Microsoft's You Phone. It's just mainly an Android feature at the moment. Not saying iPhones won't work, but many are complaining about missing or non-functional features as seen here - Using iPhone with Your Phone app (windows 10)

Also, note the system requirements do not mention IOS - Your Phone app requirements and set up

Seeing that there is a add-on for Win 10 my guess is the Windows doesn't know how to read the file format.

The format came out on whatever iPhones were current in 2017 and has been available on the top model iPhones ever since, it's an Apple proprietary format so Microsoft are basically ignoring it :wink:

The third party tool is good for what use I've made of it, ( I'm an Android user), but do occasionally, receive files from other people It's a high quality small size format - The plugin for Windows provides thumbnail views in explorer (Windows10), plus on the fly conversion in several Image processors I've tested it with - With all the changes in Windows 11 under the skin, I'm not sure it will work but it could

Because as noted Microsoft isn't supporting it.

Anyway, I can't speak on a fix or anything since I'm an Android user (Galaxy Note 20 Ultra).

This I believe is not a problem with the Microsoft My Phone app - But with the new file format used by the Iphone Camera - Which Microsoft is, not yet, supporting in Windows.

There is some support in Third party Image editing companies which will likely improve over time, and maybe to a level where Microsoft cannot ignore it's existence and use

I take a photo on my iPhone and it is uploaded to iCloud. Install the iCloud app from the MS store, open the app with your Apple ID. There are now two entries in Explorer; iClode Drive and iCloud photos. Open iCloud Photos and move or copy photos in or out. Nothing to be fixed here.

Hi,
My new iphone se and 11 has no issues viewing heic files on it even on preview pane
Default on the built in camera for image is believe it or not a mov file lol
It's literally a small video showing it's focusing and any movement

There is some 1kb AAE files that aren't shown no telling what those are.

It does copy over photos somewhat,

What I do is to install the HEIF and HEVC codex.

Open Mobimover and connect phone allow trust. It asks to turn off iCloud Backup and I'll turn off, say, photos if that's all I'm transferring. Here's some images of Mobi working. It also creates a folder on the Desktop where it transfers everything. Remember to turn on your iCloud backup after use.

Untick the boxes to leave what you need to transfer ticked.

This just shows that HEVC codec is already installed from the links I posted.

Hope that helps a bit. I only use it to transfer photos and as an added bonus it will also show deleted photos.

I totally skipped Win ME and bailed out on Windows Vista. I went from Vista to Mandrake Linux. I didn't use Windows again until I became a tester for Win 7.

Thanks. This isn’t linking it to “your phone”. Just doing what I’ve always done on Windows 10: plug the iPhone into computer via usb - open the storage, copy and paste the odd photo to desktop. Just as if from any usb storage.

When trying to do this in W11 it says incorrect file format or files corrupted. Seems strange just for copying and pasting a jpeg.

I’ll have a look at the iCloud app but last time I downloaded iCloud for windows I didn’t like it - messy.

Not strange at all. To you it's a jpeg. To Windows it's an unknown file type.

The jpeg issue has been reported elsewhere it is due to the iPhone jpeg created from the new format is not recognised.
Which is why I suggested adding the support for the new format on windows. It's worked for me on Win 10 and should be OK on win11, though you can check with the developer on the link I posted

Yeah, I understood your post. I was show showing where Microsoft doesn't list iPhone support, so my point is I'm not surprised certain issues may arise (whether on Windows 10 or 11).

Anyway, as an Android user I don't have that issue as I can copy and paste any image shot with my phone to desktop via Windows Explorer when the phone is connected to a USB cable...

Note the files are jpeg. Note the OS is Windows 11.

That said, hopefully your issue gets resolved. You might also post your feedback via the Feedback hub in Windows.

Just thought of something... Does Apple have any type of viewer codec for Windows?

As a photographer I shoot RAW files from both my D800E and D850. When I got my D850, I found I needed to download the Nikon NEF Codec from Nikon to get my D850 RAW files to show in Windows Explorer. Never needed to do this for the D800E files.

Just wondering if Apple has something like that, as will it solve your issue?

If you install the HEIC and HEVC codecs, see links in my previous post, you should be ok. You'll need to install both for the images to open.

Thanks Barman. Yes I’ll look at that. It’s not a major issue - just something I could do in Windows 10 that doesn’t work in Windows 11 (without a “fix”).

I’m happy with 11 other than a learning curve and some things different. I have some duplicate apps in the start menu (main listing) at the moments though). The actual app and then the same one again that looks like a white file. Not sure what’s going on there.

Suspect maybe some files corrupted after I uninstalled and reinstalled graphics driver.
