Thoughts on Windows 11

I have it on a test laptop so I can possibly help with queries.

There's no way at the moment that I'm going to use it anywhere else. It's quite glaringly a 'work in progress'... and I don't enjoy being a beta tester.

Same here. I’m happy using it on a spare laptop and putting it on a netbook but wouldn’t want to install on my main computer yet. The teenager feels the same. However if I had a new computer that came with it I would use it as a main computer - as many who buy new computers will. Just because the os was designed for the computer - even if still a bit of a work in progress.

The jpeg issue has been reported elsewhere it is due to the iPhone jpeg created from the new format is not recognised.
Which is why I suggested adding the support for the new format on windows. It's worked for me on Win 10 and should be OK on win11, though you can check with the developer on the link I posted
Get HEIF Image Extensions - Microsoft Store

What I do is to install the HEIF and HEVC codex.
I did not do anything special, just plugged my iPhone into my laptop, opened Explorer and navigated to This PC. Had to wait a minute for the DCIM folder to show up. I was then able to copy/drag photos to the laptop. However, double clicking on an image directly reported an error about the file being corrupted or format unsupported. What it did display was a low-res version.

The two extensions that I linked to in my previous reply had already been preinstalled by the manufacturer of my laptop so, I didn't have to do anything special either.

Could be something proprietary about the Apple device, my boy can never copy stuff to and from my W11 or W10 to his iPhone.

... or, maybe there's a setting you have to allow...

I can drag stuff over from my Android to W11...

If you install the HEIC and HEVC codecs, see links in my previous post, you should be ok. You'll need to install both for the images to open.
Yes, and it was the same in W10. I may seem illogical that you need an HEVC codec to open an image, as the 'V' stands for 'Video'. But the image format Apple use seems to have a short video 'intro' section that sweeps in as you open the image on a phone.

Both HEIF/HEIC and HEVC codecs are available from Microsoft in the Store, 'HEIF Image Extensions' is free but 'HEVC Video Extensions' costs a small amount (79p/99c).

Up until October 2020 there was a second functionally identical version 'HEVC Video Extensions from the Device Manufacturer' that was free, which I got just before it was withdrawn.

Well, I'm not done with it, but neither am I happy. I like may task bar on the left side and find the bottom awkward. I also don't like having to click open 2 or 3 levels to get basic options like "refresh." It would have been nice if they'd fixed the search bar in explorer, too. It's actually gotten harder to paste than it had become in 10.

Experience tells me that eventually everything will be adapted to 11 and be harder to use with older versions of the os, so I'll keep it and learn work arounds if necessary. I'm not sure my old computers have the capacity for 11, though.

. . .
UH.... I'll have to come back later to read all the way through to see how the got to cars. I commented on the original post.
It's not just refresh. I don't see any reason to take what used to be a click away, and bury it under two or even three sub-menus. It just drives the learning curve up, and productivity down. One persons infrequent command is another's main stay.

There are various fixes on here for making the “other options “ in the right click menu viewable for example. And with updates some of these things may gradually be addressed from feedback.

But copy and paste is actually quicker and easier when you get used to it - the little icons at the top of the right click menu.

It gets even quicker and easier when you realise you don't even need to right-click first, the icons are already available on the File Explorer command bar at the top....

That's the version I have. I bought my laptop on 29 December 2020, i.e. after the free version of this app was withdrawn, but the manufacturer had already preinstalled this version prior to its withdrawal so as a result I'm done with having to pay 99 cents to some greedy company called Microsoft Corporation─a company that definitely isn't worth spending 99 cents on TBH. 😏

The 3rd party one I posted previously has worked for me for a while now and is free for private use - It's worked with every application I've thrown the files at, even Microsoft photos - Microsoft can get their 99 cents elsewhere :p

I'm afraid initially that might have been my fault. I took an analogy from a comment and it spiraled out of control. I would like to thank the moderators for not squashing the conversation. Paraphrasing Bunny J, Sometimes we just need to have some fun. This thread can get a little dark just talking about the things that are wrong with Windows 11. I would talk about the good stuff, but that would be off topic. :ROFLMAO:

don't forget if you want windows 11 like 10 with the old start menu back then just get hold of start menu x
Thank you for reminding us. Another third party workaround for a Win 11 deficit. I know you can't please everyone, but when so many people are asking for the same thing, I would hope that MS would give it some consideration. Who knows. The updates continue to address issues. MS is still working out those issues. Even though this forum is unofficial, perhaps someone in MS will address some of the issues discussed here. I'm pretty sure someone in the MS chain keeps an eye on it. Even if it's just leisure reading.

"If Windows was designed correctly to begin with, we wouldn't need so many third party apps and plug ins slowing it down"
(I remember this quote from another forum. Unfortunately I can't find it to give the person credit.)
