Windows 11 Version 21H2
Operating system:

I am unable to 're-enable' Core Isolation due to an incompatible driver identified as...
wdsm64_prewin8.sys
Western Digital Technologies
Import date: 11/6/2021
Driver date: 11/29/2017
Driver version: 1.2.0.0
Published name: oem34.inf

1. I am not aware of nor do I know how to go about determining what device(s) uses that particular driver. It is only my ‘best guess’ that the only device that it is associated with this driver is a '2 TB USB 3.0 external storage hard drive - Western Digital model WD Elements' (purchased June2020) that I plug in to my computer for 'manually' backing up files. Namely I no longer use any of the software that came with WD Elements.
2. And I don't really know what this driver does exactly. If I can continue manually backing up my files to this external hard drive without this driver as a solution to re-enable Core Isolation, that'd fine by me.

Is there an easy way to determine above 1. and 2.?

I am thinking that deleting the driver would be the solution. But I'm not computer savvy enough to confidently make that decision. I surely don't want to delete (or attempt to delete) the driver without knowing for certain that it won't create other problems by doing so.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello TBone, and welcome. :-)

You can use option 6 below to uninstall that driver to then be able to turn on Memory Integrity.

You could also use Autoruns from Sysinternals to determine what uses the driver and to tempoarily disable the driver before possibly uninstalling to see if it will cause other unforseen issues.
I suggest if you are going to be modifying your system at the driver level you should create a system image using something like Macrium Reflect Free and a Macrium boot disk (tested to make sure it works), unless you already take such precautions of course. :-)

Ok so with thanks to Brink for the suggestion, but I was not able to find the driver via Option 6 of the tutorial.
Instead I took a chance and simply removed the driver via device manager, restarted the computer, and was then able to turn on (enable) Memory Integrity / Core Isolation.
As far as I know, for now, all is working just fine. Including the WD external hard drive (still able to manually copy back up files to it). So who knows?
To be honest - all this makes little sense / overly complicated to me. Why doesn't WD or Microsoft just issue a suitable driver update to fix this sort of issue? Guys like me who know little about such things are bound to screw something up by doing this themselves.
Onward through the fog!

Yes, that's exactly how I removed it from my system too, screenshot in post #5 in the thread Fabler2 pointed you to. Any PC that has ever has a WD external usb HDD plugged into it will thereafter be offered the 'WD SES device' driver as an optional update. You really don't need it unless you want to use WD's own encryption....

....it is only ever needed if you want to use the WD encryption software that WD supply with their external usb drives.

The WD SES Device only shows in Device Manager while a WD usb drive is plugged in. To see (and be able to uninstall it along with its driver) at any other time you need to tell Device Manager to 'View > Show hidden devices'.

All my PCs, Windows 10 and 11 had this driver installed. All have now had it removed, and the driver hidden using wushowhide.diagcab.

I am having a similar issue and cannot identify what is using the files to cause the issue :(

These are the 2 files that prevent core isolation being enabled.

1664830606918.png

They are old, and except for them being in mentioned in the inf files I cannot find them installed, not can I find them referenced in the Registry.

Can I simply delete these inf files (though I suspect not) and how would I get rid of these reference to these files that I don't seem to using anyway as I cannot find them by name :(

Hopefully something simple and easy to cure :)

Those are I believe the Samsung drivers for USB transfer (files) and Wi-Fi hotspot (modem driver?) for mobile phones. Have you at some time or do you currently connect a Samsung mobile to your PC?
Autoruns from Sysinternals will show both these drivers in it's driver section, unchecking the box next to the driver name and re booting will prevent them from being loaded.
The devices should show under Disk Drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers in device manager if you choose show hidden devices, they can be uninstalled from there, of course they will show as normal if the Samsung device is connected.

@DigitalGoat I have run Autoruns, and it doesn't find these drivers, I have deleted all entries for hidden devices in Device Manager, I have searched the hard drive for these files and I have searched in Regedit, yet they are not found by anything - except windows when I try to enable Core Isolation.

Any suggestions how to find these files?

The last known hiding place for such hard to find drivers in in the Driver Store, a repository of drivers not currently active, but available for use as and when needed.

Driver Store Explorer [RAPR] makes it easier to deal with Windows driver store. Supported operations include list/add/install/delete third-party driver packages.

That was a challenge. I had to use Safe Mode to get Driver Store Explorer [RAPR] to delete the problematic inf files that were pointing to the sys files however now deleted and Core Isolation enabled!

Thanks to all for your suggestions and help.
