This tutorial will show you how to install and set up Windows Mixed Reality for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows Mixed Reality is the first spatial operating system. Instead of using a flat screen and a 2D interface, it uses our instinctual ability to navigate three-dimensional space. Every place has a purpose, and content has context. Just as your PC starts at the desktop interface and your phone begins with a home screen, Windows Mixed Reality starts at the Mixed Reality home. It's an environment that you can navigate and personalize to make your own. It's the canvas for the thousands of apps available in the Microsoft Store or SteamVR. You can multitask with these apps like never before--in 3D where space is almost limitless.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 powers Windows Mixed Reality on variety of headsets across a diverse set of PC hardware. The power of your PC will determine what experiences you can have. With higher end PCs, you get some extra capabilities and features:
  • Crisper visuals and a higher refresh rate.
  • More apps and experiences—including the most graphics-intensive games.
  • A ‘’mirror’’ window on your desktop that shows what you see in mixed reality.
  • Record and share videos and photos of your mixed reality experiences.
What you'll need to run Windows Mixed Reality:

9 Do step 10 (all experience) or step 11 (seated and standing) below depending on how you want set up your room boundary.

If you choose Seated and standing during headset setup or later, you use your headset without a boundary. You need to stay in one spot when using the headset to avoid physical obstacles and tripping hazards. You can sit down or stand up, but you shouldn't move around. Keep in mind that obstacles might be overhead and around you.

If you choose All experiences, you set up a boundary, and can use apps and experiences that work with and without a boundary. Some apps might be designed to work with a boundary. Those apps might not work or provide the same experience if you use them without a boundary.

11 Set me up for seated and standing

Set me up for seated and standing (also known as desk scale) experience will work at your desk. It's a good option if your space isn't large. It also means that you'll be using your headset without a boundary. You'll need to stay in one place, as you'll have no boundary to help you avoid physical obstacles. Some apps and games aren't designed to be a boundary experience, so they might not work as intended.

A) Click/tap on Set me up for seated and standing. (see screenshot below)
