I have been trying to install Windows 11 on my 2021 HP Laptop 14-fq1000 with Rizen-5 running on Windows 10 Home 64-bit Version 19043.1266. I ran the PC Health app and it says I meet all the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11. I run the Microsoft Installation Assistant and everything runs fine until I get to 85% of the Installation process, then the Clock starts and asks to Restart. I restart and get the following error message on bootup "Unexpect_Kernel_Mode_Trap" and resets back to Windows 10.

I have gone thru this process 5 times now and have done the following.

1. Checked Windows update for any updates available.
2. Updated 14 drivers from the HP Software site.
3. Disconnected all connected devices from the USB port.
4. Ran the Windows Installation Troubleshooter - found no issues.
5. Reset the PC back to factory settings
6. Reinstalled Windows 10 twice

Does anyone have insight into what I can do to get Windows 11 to install and get past the 85% mark? I really think it is probably some driver that is causing this but I don't know what to do or how to determine exactly what is causing the problem.

I'm having the same issue with a desktop machine. My machine is an Asus Prime Z370-A, 16g DDR4, Gen 8 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz, 1tb SSD w/75% free space. The update notice for the upgrade to version 11 came in on our WSUS server, tried that and failed at 90%. I then used the installation assistant, it went through all the hoopla, rebooted a couple times, got to 90% and it also failed. Not much for logs to go on for review so, not sure what its problem is. I have been running the beta in a VM for the past 3 months with no issues and have also been running it on my desktop at home, which has a Gen 7 Intel CPU....This will not install now since it decided that the Gen 7 cpu wasn't good enough, even though it has been running for months in a VM. Any ideas? I have a dozen workstations that will be upgraded to version 11 and they like my workstation all comply with the windows 11 installation requirements.

I too was running the next to last build of the Dev Preview of 11. The last update, 2000.471, I could not get it to install either. I was getting the same problems with that build, not being able to install that one. I tried many times to install it and never could get it installed. This was like on the 2nd to 4th of October, so I thought never mind, will wait for the full release of 11 when came out on the 5th. I ended up doing a fresh install of 10 and waited for the final release, but that was a no-go also. So I guess I will just have to wait until someone comes up with an idea of how to fix this problem or wait until Microsoft releases a working version for my machine.

...... New development .....
The installation attempt I referred to earlier is from my workstation that lives in an Active Directory domain at work where I get the privelege of maintaining the domain and all the complaints that go along with the job. I have a similar desktop machine at home that is not AD joined (makes sense eh?). I followed the same procedure for installation and shock shock....installation completed fine, although it did take almost 4 hours to accomplish. I watched the entire process (ran out of popcorn during this show). I then subjected myself to the same installation atttempt on my machine at work (from remote). The difference seemed to be during the Installation Assistant phase just before it lets you know that it will be rebooting the machine in 30 minutes. The installation ticker did not show getting beyond 84% but instead jumped to the countdown for the reboot. The following black screen installation/upgrade process eventually failed.
Hello gurus.... Is the failure due to the workstation belonging to an AD joined domain?

Hi all, I know this sounds a little lame, but I had similar problems where the install froze at 76%. After some trolling, I tried one solution that I thought probably wouldn't work, but it did. When the install file is downloaded from the update assistant execute it in administrator mode. I tried it and again it appeared to freeze at 76%, but finally continued, and then again around 95% and eventually (~5 min) continued. The install hicupped a few times but finally said it would restart and it did. Go figure, the installed system booted up fine and I spent the next half hour checking all the configurations in settings (which is a good idea since some of them were reset).

Try the simple solution first... :)

Good morning,
Yep, I found a post that referred to running as administrator along with running sfc /scannow to make sure there are no corrupted files. I did that last night on my work machine along with running dism /cleanup-image /restorehealth. Still no joy with the installation.
