Installing 24H2 on system-disk of less than 64GB - is it possible?

Hi Chaps,

I'm usually rather miserly with allocating space for my system disk, as I don't really use much capacity and I usually assign more to my data partition.

My current install of Win 23H2 resides on a system disk with 40GB of total space. I have two partitions on a single SSD: the 40GB system partition and a ~405GB data partition. The OS and all of my installed applications takes up a mere 15.5GB, leaving me with around 24.5GB free space on C:.

However, the requirement for 24H2 seems to require 64GB of free-space. I'm unable to resize the system partition, as the data partition is fully used.

Is there any way to install 24H2 on my 40GB system partition, given that I have a fairly generous 24.5GB of free space?

No. 11 needs at least 52GB partition, but when I clean installed 24H2, there was like 2 GB free space left.
11 downloads updates and drivers during the setup, it is cleaned afterwards, but the setup might fail.
If you compress system partition, you might get a few GBs back, but 52GB is literally the minimum.
24H2 is more robust, it reserves a certain space, I have cleaned everything, yet it takes 30GB+

Incorrect. I have an ASUS laptop with internal storage of 32GB and I install 24H2 to it no problem at all and have 8GB free space.

Make sure to use the "Compact OS" feature either during installation or afterward to maximize space savings. If you need info on how to do this, let me know and I will provide details.

EDIT: Note that these results are even with a larger than normal Recovery partition of 1GB.

EDIT #2: LOL. Just remembered that I have a second laptop that has 64GB internal storage and when installing onto that system it feels like I have all kinds of free space (a little sarcasm intended). Seriously, I can add Microsoft 365 and a bunch of other stuff with no problems on 64GB. I forgot about that system initially because that system also has an M.2 NVMe slot so I did add an SSD but the point remains that 64GB actually feels roomy compared to the 32GB system.

Below is a copy of my notes when I was figuring this out for the first time. In my notes I reference an unattended answer file that can be used to enable Compact OS during installation. If you want more info about that, let me know.



On a system with a very small amount of storage, for example, 32 GB or 64 GB, you may want to consider performing a Compact OS installation. This causes Windows to store a number of system files in a compressed state.

You can install Windows with "Compact OS" enabled by using an unattended answer file, but this is not mandatory. You can also enable it after Windows is already installed. Instructions for both are below.

How to Install Windows with Compact OS Enabled Using an Unattended Answer File

To deploy Windows as a Compact OS install, in your autounattend.xml answer file, navigate to Pass 1 windowsPE > Setup > ImageInstall > OSImage. Change the value of Compact to true. In my testing, on a 64-bit installation of Windows, this can save about 2.6 GB of storage space.


How to Enable Compact OS After Windows is Installed

You can also turn on Compact OS after Windows is installed. Do this by opening an elevated command prompt and then running this command:

Compact /CompactOS:Always

You can disable Compact OS with this command from an elevated command prompt:

Compact /CompactOS:Never


How to Determine if Compact OS is Enabled

You can determine if the system is running a Compact OS by running this command:

Compact /CompactOS:Query


Additional Space Savings

You can save some additional space by reducing the size of the hibernation file by 30%. To do this, use this command:

Powercfg /h /type reduced

Follow-up to my above post:

I just did a quick mini-research session. I was curious to know how the Powercfg /h /type reduced command makes the hibernation file smaller. If you run that command it eliminates the ability to perform a standard hibernation and will support only "hiberboot" aka Fast Startup.

To save even more space you can disable hibernation altogether: powercfg /h off

My Win 11 24h2 use less than 30G on the drive but I have moved C:\Users (SSD) to D:\Users (HDD) and also my Virtual memory (16G fix) is on D:\ and hibernation is disabled.

Compacting the OS makes it slower.
As you have the data partition on same drive why don't you make C: a 80G partition?

That may be technically true, but in the real world, I notice no discernable difference. Of course, your milage may vary.

Ah, yes. Good point. You can also easily move the libraries such as Documents, Downloads, Videos, etc. to another location. Just bring up the properties in File Explorer and go to the "Location" tab.

I had Windows 10 on my Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 hybrid tablet/laptop which has only 64GB internal storage. I installed all applications and keep my data on a 256GB SDXC card. I upgraded that to all versions of Windows 11 including 24H2. I compacted OS and the entire storage and always make sure any application is installed on the SDXC card. I barely have 5GB free space but at least it is enough to keep the system from crawling as is the case with 2GB or less.

I also have an HP Stream 7 tablet with Intel Atom Z series, 1GB RAM and 32GB internal storage originally run Windows 8 32-bit and I replaced it with 10 32-bit (clean installation), as there was not enough free space to properly upgrade. No matter what I do (compact OS etc), free space is barely over 2GB, it is slow but usable. Too bad the UEFI firmware is locked by HP to 32-bit only and I cannot test it with Windows 11.

My Desktop came with 512GB NVMe M.2 in Apr. '22 with Win10 Pro and immediately after setup was Upgraded to Win11:

I just tested the dism method of 24H2 installation to a VHDX set at 40 GB and it installed fine but it was slower installing than normal.

As you can see, I still have 17 GB free. So yeah it is possible to clean install in 40GB,

You can obviously improve on this by invoking compatos, moving pagefile, disabling hibernation, moving user drivers etc.

Having said that 40GB is very tight, not leaving much space for apps.

In systems with such low disk space you either install a couple of apps or you need a larger drive such as an SDXC card to install applications and data. I haven't move my user files, I just leave the folders empty and store my data on the SDXC card.

Speaking of an SD card, my little laptop with only 32GB storage does have enough space to hold Windows and install Microsoft 365, but that leaves me extremely tight on space. I consider 365 to be mandatory on every one of my systems but I can't figure out how to get it to install on my SD card.

That machine is pretty much just experimental, but it would still be nice if I could get that to work.

One experiment was to create a junction point to redirect it to the SD card. That seemed to work, at least for installation, but it would not allow me to run it from there.

Is anyone aware of a way to actually install Microsoft 365 to something other than C:?

NOTE: There are references on the Web to using a registry entry, but that seems to no longer work on current versions.

I have never found a way to install MS 365 to another drive. I even tried with symlinks to fool installer it was installing to C drive.

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess I'll just use my workaround of Windows to go on an external SSD.

11 downloads updates and drivers during the setup, it is cleaned afterwards, but the setup might fail.

This part is true if you're using Windows Setup, which enforces a 52 GB drive minimum.

But it's possible to install Windows manually using the following steps:
1. Boot from WinPE. Open a CMD shell (with Shift-F10)​
2. Manually re-partitioning and reformat the volumes as needed.​
3. Run DISM /Apply-Image to extract the install image to the target volume.​
4. Run "bcdboot [drive]:\Windows".​
5. Reboot into the newly installed Windows.​

Because you're not using Setup, there are no checks for the Windows volume size. For more details, you can follow this guide:
