I joined this forum hoping I learn something and get my internet speed fixed. Here is my dilemma, last week I switched from verizon fios 1gb speed to the new 2gb speed. Fios technicians are saying my computer cannot handle the speed. I keep getting 600 for the download and 1900 for the upload. I'm new at this so please forgive me if I'm not explaining it correctly. I have an Alienware R11, I9m 64GB ram, 4TB ssd HD. When I called Alienware tech they said that my card can handle 2.5 for port, so he is saying it's a combination on that one port. So i wanted to know if that's correct or has anyone with a 2GB fios optical reached that 2gb speed for both upper and lower? Thanks and hoping to resolve or cancel the service.

2 Gb as in 2 Gigabit (is what most ISP use to promote their services - since the numbers are higher) - which is 250 Mb? Or 2 GB as in 2 Gigabyte - which is 2000 Mb?

If it's the first - your Ethernet (Killer E3000) should be able to support this speed. More often than not - the low speed issues are related to the NW cable used (the market is over-saturated with low quality NW cables - like Cat 5 being sold and labeled as Cat 6 or even Cat 6A) or some limits set by the Killer E3000 features. Use Windows Search and type "View Network Connections" - > Right Click on Ethernet (Killer E3000) - > Proprieties - > Configure - > Advanced - > scroll down to Speed & Duplex and instead of Auto-Negotiation set it to 2.5 Gbps Full Duplex. Also set the Power Saving Features (Green Ethernet / Energy-Efficient Ethernet) and Gigabit Lite - to Disabled.

If it's the latter (i pretty much doubt it - since it's quite expensive and a bit overkill for a home user) - you'll need something more professional than Killer E3000.

The solution is VERY simply.

type services.msc in the run dialogue box

in the service menu, look for and disable all KILLER services

then uninstall the Killer Control Center from your start menu apps

restart, and watch your internet come back to life!

Green Ethernet - can be Disabled as well (a power saving feature). Here's a description for most of those features:

If you don't use any of those - you can actually Disable them. Speed & Duplex set to 2.5 Gb is what brought the biggest change. The other features can help here and there (reducing latency while increasing CPU resources and such - see ARP offload). Tho, most of this features are rather old - and CPUs potential has increased considerably since then. Pretty sure your CPU can take it - but hey - doesn't hurt to tested it out (see if it helps more if Disabled or Enabled). Personally, have all all those features set to Disabled - cause i don't have any use for most of them - while the rest don't seem to help much. Yet, that's just me - maybe for your system is different.

Seeing that your Upload can handle 2.5 Gb - that's actually proves that the hardware is capable. Your Download Speed may be limited by the ISP. You could also check the latency - see if it's stable or if there's any packet loss. Windows Key + R and copy paste the following ping www.google.com -t Check the time= for a minute or two - which should be low and constant (mine is 11ms - but i don't live in U.S.).

You could also check if the MTU size is properly set - just follow this guide:

PS.As Spartan mentioned - Disabling the Services could help too (again, try it out - and see which helps / you can't brake anything). I do have those Disabled as well - since one of them proved to be quite troublesome - limiting the Wi-Fi connection to the point where i couldn't use the phone - to connect to the internet.

Thank you all again, I disabled all killer and changed green ethernet, i still don't understand how to change MCU im stupid I don't get it, and I forgot that the 4th Verizon tech said to get a cat 6 cable when the Verizon tech came yesterday to change my wire he said that the tech guys in office do not know what the field guys carry. All he had was a Cat 6 cable and he said he never even heard of cat 6A cable.

Back in the day... Verizon had a "tool" that would tweak your computer settings for maximum speed.
Might want to call Verizon tech support and ask if they still have that tool... somewhere.

One of the things it would do is set the correct MTU values in the registry.

i found an MTU optimizer and it said it optimized my MTU. Still the same.

All I can remember is that it was a tool on one of the many Verizon websites.

Well, I found this...

I have no idea what it does.
I haven't had any issues with speed. I pay for 300/300 and actually get....

I don't use any speedtest "apps".
I go straight to the website itself, and run the test there.

Except for a very few instances, I'm not a big fan of "apps".
They're just another piece of (possibly faulty) software, between you and your destination.

you all ROCK, i don't know if it was the MTU or because i realized from the first post i didn't disable all killer settings, i went back and checked. I get now consistent 2345 downloads and 2046 uploads, i was using Chrome, but funny i get lower speeds using Mozilla Firefox. Now my last question to you experts, will it be worth it to buy cat 6 A cable will i see a bit more speed? Again THANK YOU ALL, you were better than Verizon and Alienware tech all put together.

Sure... you can't really have too many spare CAT cables, anyway. :-)

Not using it is one thing - understandable even (since Cat6A is slightly more expensive compared to Cat 6 - thus, for a big company like Verizon - who might spent 8 mil $ on Cat6 Cables - they'd have to spend 11 Mil $ on Cat6a at same length), tho - not knowing about it is a bit surprising (if you're the cable guy) - since it's been around for quite some time. This days we're already at Cat8 - which should be significantly faster (if you can afford hardware and internet at more 10x your current speed). Can't say that i tried this newer cables - since even proper Cat6 - are more than enough for most home users. Personally, i preferred Cat6a cause of the higher quality build (multiple variants too) - not to mention - the necessary length to cover most homes make it an affordable choice (yet, still - most people find the idea of spending 16$ instead of 22$ for same length - far more appealing). Anyway, pretty sure you won't get better speeds even with a shielded Cat6A (based on the achieved speeds - the capable you're using now doesn't seem to have any issues).
