Hello.

I have a Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 on my PC with HDMI output.

Currently i have a old Samsung Monitor running at 1920x1080 at 60Hz (HDMI connection).

Can anyone tell me if UHD 630 would let me run a newer monitor (still at 1920x1080) at 120Hz? Would HDMI support that? I read that for 144hz you need a Display Port. Since my PC only has an HDMI i would still be happy with 120Hz.

Thanks

Hi
144Hz is okay for HDMI 1.3 and onwards. According to Intel you should get 75Hz (144Hz maybe) for HDMI 1.4, and possibly 144Hz (240Hz maybe) for HDMI 2.0 on that device.
If that did not work, you would need to configure the newer monitor to run at 60/75Hz.

When we talk about HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 are we specifically speaking about the cable? Does Intel UHD 630 support 2.0? If not does 1.4 support 120Hz for sure?

Well, we have to talk about the monitor, cable, motherboard and GPU.
If you are going for a new monitor, then that should be fine.
However, the GPU and motherboard give conflicting advice.
Intel say that it is possible with the GPU chip.
But, if you check the Ideacentre 510A-15ICB specification sheet, then Lenovo advice is a little more cryptic.
Lenovo say that the motherboard support up to 3840x2160@30Hz(HDMI 1.4). But they do not provide specific detail on the refresh rate for 1920x1200.
Obviously 30Hz is a lot lower refresh rate than you are hoping for. But you only need a lower resolution. In which case the refresh rate may increase.
Lenovo only say that the motherboard support is 1.4 HDMI, not 2.0 HDMI.
So we cannot really say what refresh rate the Ideacentre 510A-15ICB supports at a resolution of 1920x1200 for sure.
I have looked on other support forums, yet I cannot see example of anyone using a Ideacentre 510A-15ICB at that resolution and refresh rate combination, via HDMI 1.4.

Heres what i found elsewhere
HDMI 2.0 however is still only supported with an external converter chip (LSPCon).
According to the Intel specifications (Table 2-21, Page 42 of the 7th Generation Intel® Processor Families for H Platforms Datasheet, Vol 1), the best you can do with your processor's HDMI 1.4 interface is 4096x2160 at 30Hz. By my calculation, based upon the information in HDMI - Wikipedia, this should allow your 3440x1440 monitor to run at 53Hz. Rounding down, It might offer you this.

Ok, this is all based upon a native 4:4:4 interface. According to this same Wikipedia page, configuring for 4:2:0 should allow you to accomplish what you would like - if you can figure out how to configure for 4:2:0. From what I can see, there doesn't seem to be a way to accomplish this with the current capabilities of the Intel Graphics Control Center app. If someone else has figured out how to do this, please chime in.

Edit, I also found the manual too Intel UHD Graphics 630 Integrated Shared 1x HDMI® 1.4, 1x VGA 1920x1080@30Hz(HDMI), 1920x1200@60Hz(VGA) DirectX® Straight from the manual here L https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sy...entre_510_15ICB/ideacentre_510_15ICB_Spec.pdf

Yes, that is the same specification sheet as I posted. And you have quoted the VGA spec for 1920x1080, not the HDMI spec.

Of course, the user could use a discrete graphics card in that computer, and that would provide a higher specification. But that was not the question being asked.

What about the chip converter? Would that possibly work?

Open Intel Graphics Properties and go to Screen Resolution. Find the Custom Resolution setting, There will be a disclaimer that you do it on your own risk, reply yes and then try to add 1920x1200 60Hz. Try various timing methods, most likely the CVS-RB (or similar) will work. If it does, your graphics card, cable and monitor support this resolution, it just isn't reported properly to Windows, so it is disabled by default. Use Intel Graphics Properties to change to that resolution the first time, then it should be available in Display Settings of Windows. I would then try adding 1920x1200 120Hz but this is not very likely, depending on your graphics card's HDMI output. cable and monitor.

@spapakons @Devlin1888 @iko22 thanks for your help. So i guess this depends on the GPU, Monitor, Cable and Motherboard :p

By the way that manual states that max for my GPUon HDMI is 1920x1080 at 30hz but right now i am running that resolution at 60hz.

Well, like I was discussing with @Devlin1888 , I think you will find that 1920 x 1080 @ 30Hz is a VGA maximum, not a HDMI maximum. That would explain why your GPU still works at 60 Hz HDMI.

Don't forget that 1920x1200 is not very common resolution. So if it is not there by default, probably you can add it with custom resolution utility. If you can do 1920x1080@60 it should not be too difficult to do 1920x1200@60. In worst case you should be able to do 1920x1200@30. Are you sure your monitor supports 1920x1200? Maybe the native resolution is 1920x1080. Or maybe this is possible with another source, not HDMI. For example, I have a Sony 19" that on HDMI can do 1280x720 (HD ready), but on VGA can do 1440x900, so I use VGA instead.

Thanks for the reply. As @iko22 has stated, what i actually want is to know is if my system could run 1920 x 1080 @ 120Hz .

To do 120Hz try an HDMI 2.0 cable. If it doesn't work and monitor supports it, probably your graphics card doesn't have an HDMI 2.0 compliant output. Sorry to bring you the bad news...

Haven't bought the monitor yet hence the enquiring. I don't know if UHD 630 supports 2.0. I think manual states 1.4 .

So, it may not work. If it is a laptop, and the monitor is on display I would go with the laptop to the store and try before buying. Maybe they can let you try anyway, ask their Service Department.

The only issue i see, is that lenovo say that it will only support HDMI 1.4 at 60HZ but HDMI 1.4 in general does support up to 144hz at 1080p. I don't think we're gonna be able to come up with a guaranteed answer on this one due to the conflicts between the two :S
Edit : If it was a cable question or something you'd just buy the cable and trial and error it but with it being a monitor i 100% get not wanting to spend the money on it for it to be a hit or a miss. Suppose you could always send the monitor back. But hassle none the less
