Intermitent Bugs

I do a lot of web work on my sites. I use Expression 4, File Explorer, photoshop, Filezilla etc. I have noticed that when I am trying to open something by pressing buttons in Expression 4 they now frequently freeze, it won't let me do anything. Example is changing to the code page from visual. I have to reboot and try again. Its not Expression 4 as it always worked up and into win 10. Perfectly. Now in 11, I am getting this 'freeze button' annoyance. Just a thought ............

It is quite possible that the Expression 4 you are using is not compatible with Windows 11, yet, check for an update from the developer, Hopefully they will put out an update although it did reach end of life in 2015

Was going to add an edit: Also frozen were links in desktop, task bar. Rebooted and all open again. Thanks for link, I only use Web section

I would first check my RAM and other hardware for errors. Then I would try to disable transparency and fade in Settings, Accessibility, Visual Effects, just in case some visual effect cannot render properly causing the freeze. I would also right-click the Expression 4 shortcut, select Properties, go to Compatibility tab and check the "Disable full screen customizations" button, just in case.

I was looking at my desktop not touching anything, having a drink, when I noted the mouse cursor 'twitch' - then the entire desktop shot all icons over to the left. I guessed maybe a mouse fault send bad instructions, so i pulled that Corsair mouse out and installed my Roccat Kova and relevant software. I am still in early days but it just might have done the trick, but thats only a guess. At least the icons are behaving themselves. *shrugs*

more bugs. Apart from the fact that my taskbar has slipped half way off the bottom of the screen. The date and time has altered. I had day showing as well as date, day has gone. Winaero tweaks (for win 11) does not help. I have told them. Windows feedback does not work tries to open but nothing comes up. Windows security actions (Blue Shield) in taskbar says that action required but the two pop up links lead to Microsoft Store which then tells me nothing has been found - dead end. Apologies to Z3, I did see a site bug thread but lost it.

I am dealing with a similar case right now, Security Settings do not open, it prompts to find a suitable app in the Store. I temporarily activated the build-in Administrator account and there it works OK, so it must be some weird setting in my customer's account. I already tried sfc and dism without any change. To avoid creating a new account and deleting the original, I now attempt to do an in-place upgrade (reinstall Windows 11 on top). If that fails, I will have to create a new account, copy all data and delete the original account. I'll let you know.

PS: The mouse twitch and desktop icon position change might be an upgrade to the graphics driver from Windows Update. Doing that the screen resolution changed, even for a few seconds, blinking the screen and messing your icons.

The attempt to do an in-place upgrade failed for some reason. I also tried to reset Windows Store and re-register the Windows apps, along with registering the DLL files as described on the Microsoft thread. Something of all worked, not sure which, and now the Security Settings work as usual.

my sleep function, which is always never, today switched itself on to a 15 minute cycle. I have reset to never.

I also have been getting winddows/sys32 folder opening unprompted

Glad its not just me. How do I re register the apps??

I tried wsres in dos and the store opened. But this is still what I get when I try to open the windows security link in taskbar

This is getting good - NOT! I opened you tube to watch a Sabaton video, no sound. Checked all the relevant buttons and lists, all seemed in order. I went into control panel and sound - to find that the sound had been switched to one I have never used; an nvidia one, which does not seem to exist. I switched speakers back to default and its working again. I will go back now and see if I can delete it.

Have you searched for malware? For the sound probably Windows Update upgraded to incompatible drivers. So the sound appears to work but you hear nothing. Manually update your audio driver. To re-register the Windows apps see here: Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10

I've got one question for you. With all the trouble you have had (and continue to have) have you ever considered a clean install? If you upgraded from 10 to 11, there's a chance you did not get a clean upgrade. Personally I never upgrade when a new OS is released although there are others here who will disagree with me. I'm a stickler with stuff like that.

MWB premium on the case and Bit Defender. I dont think thats the problem Spap.
Glass: I am very wary of clean installs, as I dont want to lose anything or the threat of losing anything. The reason I give the appearance of a lot of issues, Win 11 is running and so are my games but, being a new OS, there is a chance that a cure migft be obvious to some, who could also report issues direct to MS. I seem to recall a few issues with 8 and 10, but they were soon sorted by reporting them. I do hope I am not annoying anyone by rabbitting on, but it seems to me that, however small an issue may be, its another problem to be solved. I am sure 11 will soon be the 'one' to end all worries, we can but hope anyway. I have been with windows since 3.11. I did dabble with linux in the past but didn't like the lack of software. Dont know what it like now, not that I am bothered. I am no way heading down a dual boot road either. I am always in the debt of the members here, they stop me going insane ..............

No,not a all. I didn't intend my question to insinuate that at all. It was just a suggestion. That's why we are all here; to share ideas and solutions if we know one. I suggested it only because sometimes, that's the drastic measure one has to take when their system starts to do weird and unexplainable stuff. In the past, there were times I spent way more time and energy trying to solve a problem than it took me to reinstall and start completely clean. Installing apps (and I have a LOT) is a pain, but it's worth it in the end. My data is separate from the OS so usually I can do it all in an afternoon. Now, I don't have to worry about it anymore. I learned to take a backup immediately after a clean install so I don't ever have to go through one again.

How to clean install with minimum risk of losing data:
Instead of taking a time consuming full backup and format, boot with installation medium and proceed to install Windows 11 on the largest partition. You will get a warning that the partition already contains Windows and if you proceed it will be copied at Windows.old folder. Proceed and wait. Once at the desktop update all drivers. Then go at Windows.old folder, open users then your old user folder to copy-paste all your data. If you show hidden files, you can even copy some application data from ProgramData, Program Files and AppData folders to the respective folders on new installation. Then install the application again to retrieve your settings. This works for Firefox for example. Doing it right and you can retrieve your bookmarks, your saved passwords, your theme etc. Do copy all application data before installing the applications, you never know.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. The most guaranteed way to not lose data is have a full backup of the system and the correct way to do a true clean install of Windows is to delete all Windows partitions and install on unallocated space, exactly like this tutorial says, followed by installing your applications.
