Does anyone know of software (preferably free) to backup my iPhones to my PC. Otherwise, can the same iTunes be used to back multiple phones?

Can these backups to PC be set to copy the entire content of the iPhone to a folder on the PC? (I'm thinking all of my apps and their settings and all of my local mail, contacts, etc.)

It looks so easy on TV shows like Person of Interest, where the good guy just stood close to the suspicious guy for about ten seconds, and then the phone the good guy was using showed a message "Phone cloned!"

Yah, I know that's fiction, but what I want is the ability to replace my current iPhone with a new one and transfer the entire contents of the current one to the new one, if there is any such possibility.

Glasskuter I was really hoping for an alternative to iTunes. While I really like my iPhone, I have never been a fan of Apple's OS, too much of a mystery as it seems to decide everything.

Anyway, I followed the instructions that you sent, and got to the point and selected backup to this computer, and then nothing happens. No active buttons such backup not. It's probably me but this the same old Apple behavior. I have clicked every button and restarted the selection, but nothing is happening. The Apple mystery continues.

You could try AOMEI FoneTool which seems to be able to manage both Backup to PC and selective data transfer.

Haven't used it myself so can't comment on quality - my iPhone is is paired with a MacBook Pro. There is a freeware version available so no financial risk to try it out.

Can these backups to PC be set to copy the entire content of the iPhone to a folder
I've not done it so can't swear it as gospel but according to step 6 in the second article you can select the option to backup your entire iphone contents.
Here is the official Apple documentation for the process. Back up iPhone

an alternative to iTunes
There are third party apps the can do it but they are paid. Two that I am aware of are Mobimover and uBackup. Also in the following article it says you can backup SOME things using icloud. But if you do not want to pay, it's pretty much itunes or nothing.
selected backup to this computer, and then nothing happens.
In step 6 of second procedure above, you should have left the option "automatically backup set to icloud as checked." This keeps your icloud backup current at all times. For a manual backup, you should select ""Manually backup and restore" There is a 'backup now' option below it. This option backs up entire iphone. (same as making an image in Windows)

edit: glad you got it accomplished. My post crossed with yours but I'm leaving it here in case others have need of the information
