ISO stands for... International Organization for Standardization

Here's a good description...

Here's an encyclopedia of computer terms... sort of.

It would probably be a good idea just to Google: computer acronyms

Here's a couple .pdf lists of acronyms...

Right now I want to know what ISO means please?
A frequent use of ISO or specifically the .iso file is a format used by some programs to create a single file that is an image of the original CD or DVD disc useful to post on Web sites and allow downloading the file which is then used to create an exact duplicate of the original disc when that disc is not available for copying/duplicating for local use. There's considerable savings in providing such access by companies such as postage, cost of discs, packaging, etc.

I got that but I also considered that since the question was posted on a computer-related forum I'd put some context into what the meaning actually is for computer users. Some people even consider the USA to be backward in relation to other things such as metric measurements which also can involve International Standards.

Actually the US is far ahead of the game. In the science world we use nothing but the metric system.
For everyone else we use the old way.

So we have TWO systems. The rest of the world needs to... catch up to the US.

I can measure how big a room is by walking heel to toe across the room.
Try doing that with the metric system. :D

A particular system of units does not make measurements harder or easier - it's a matter of calibration of your measuring device. Scientists typically like to formulate theories in dimensionless form - meaning being completely independent of the unit system. In that sense, whether you use Celsius or Fahrenheit does not make you "ahead" or "behind" no different from whether you use yards or meters. It's just a matter of what you are used to.

For the record, it's a file format based on the ISO-9660 standard, originally based for optical media (like CD, DVD and laser disk). But because it packages all the data needed for a disk image in a single physical file composed of countless logical files, it's still used even though optical media aren't used much at all anymore.

For the record, it's a file format based on the ISO-9660 standard, originally based for optical media (like CD, DVD and laser disk). But because it packages all the data needed for a disk image in a single physical file composed of countless logical files, it's still used even though optical media aren't used much at all anymore.

Cool, the .iso file format is like Latin, it is used while native speakers are dead

There are dictionary extensions, even Edge added Define.
I use selection search with thefreedictionary.com
