Solved Is there a good reason for leaving Fast Boot enabled with an Asus Z790 bios?

By default, on my system (see below) Fast boot is enabled by Asus. Is there any reason to leave it on?
Does it affect boot times if off?

Depends how impatient one is I would imagine.
I don’t believe it makes any difference to the OS operation, it removes as apposed to adds. I like the startup logo etc. Boot time gives me pause to start my activities.

I see now they have Ultra Fast Boot (or something, I don’t recall the naming) and read online by some people that it was so fast, they couldn’t get into their BIOS lol And had to reset the CMOS.

Also disables USB functionality which can be a problem.

I think that’s key. Disabling Fast Boot. Disabling the boot Logo so you can read the status quo, post boot 3 to 5 seconds. No functionality lost behind the scenes.

An NVMe as a boot drive. CPU’s and RAM these days, how fast does one want to go?

I disable the boot logo so I can see the BIOS splash screen when I boot.
With a quick glance I can tell if the major hardware is functioning.

Simple answer - see what difference it makes to you. For modern pcs, I doubt it makes more than a couple of seconds difference really.

All it does is bypass some of the Power On Self Test (POST) steps which waa useful back in days when hardware was less reliable.

Personally, I leave it on as I have never bothered to turn it off.

The answer seems to be there aren't really clear benefits of turning fast boot off in the bios. I think I'm going to make the change discussed by @Ghot which is disabling the Boot Logo meaning I can see what is going on during the boot up. Better than the blank screens and then Asus logo.

There is some reason to disable Fast Boot in the BIOS.
I just can't remember why. It causes issues with something else when it's enabled.

I would just google: should I disable fast boot in the BIOS?

...and see what others say.

I conducted a search online. I found some potential issues when Fast Boot is enabled in bios.
• Can cause problems when Wake-on-LAN is enabled.
• Boot can be too fast so user cannot get into bios.
• Windows Update can fail.
• Can cause issues with AV software at boot time.

That said I don't currently have any of these issues.

I leave mine disabled. I don't really "need" fast boot anyway.
I only really reboot after a Windows Update. :-)

Tested and timed both options and Fast Boot on was 15 seconds faster (25%) than off.

My Gigabyte system has an Ultra Fast option in the BIOS. When enabled, you don't get to see the boot screen and can't enter the BIOS upon boot. Thankfully, I have a shortcut that boots to the BIOS from Windows when clicked. I've had no issues with it.

Fast boot does not affect restart at all. During Fast Startup, the kernel session is not closed, but it is hibernated. It allows a computer to startup faster from a shutdown. We have seen various off-the-wall issues here that has been resolved by turning off fast startup. I do not enable it for this reason as well as I rarely shutdown my computer. Neither do I use hibernate. I don't want a function that uses so much of my drive space as the hiberfil.sys does.

I have an Asus Z790 board and turned off Fast Boot which is more trouble than it is worth if you have a SSD system drive.

Are you talking about Windows Fast Startup. People often confuse that with Fast Boot.

Fast Boot is a bios option to bypass certain power on tests. At most it would only take a few seconds. It would be an ancient pc to take 15 seconds difference.

Just tested on my laptop and it did not make any difference to withing 0.25 second accuracy of my manual timing.

I haven't got them confused, see the screen capture of the bios Fast Boot setting in my top post. I always have Windows Fast Startup disabled.
