Is there a way to ditch the "Recommended" section of the Start screen?

When clicking on Start, the upper half of the Start screen shows pinned apps, the lower half shows "Recommended". Does anyone know of a way to get rid of this recommended section or at the very least clear all contents without halving to remove them one by one?

Hello mate, :-)

Turning off "Show recently added apps" and "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer" below should leave the Recommended section empty.

I'm not aware of a way to completely remove the Recommended section yet.

Thanks, Brink. That's odd that I didn't notice those options previously. I wonder if that was something added during newer builds or if I was merely blind and missed it.

In any case, thanks for pointing me to that. That's good enough. It gets me 95% of the way there :-).

I'm not aware of a way to completely remove the Recommended section yet.

The real PITA is you get a patronising message saying you can turn them back on in settings. Dohhh if I turned them off, then I know I can turn them on again!

What is absolutely unacceptable is that the space for recommendations is not freed up if you do not want it, so at least you can have more icons at least with this travesty of a start menu.

Agreed. That space could be put to much better use by allowing the pinning of more apps, at least that would be my personal preference. Maybe in the 22H1 release :-).

I agree about the wasted space.

It makes me scratch my head how Microsoft manage to get things so wrong when making decisions on the start menus in recent operating systems. For some reason, I always seem to get images in my head of them sitting around sharing a pipe when deciding on these things. :dizzy:

No wonder that third party start menus have been so popular in recent years.

Hello mate, :)

Turning off "Show recently added apps" and "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer" below should leave the Recommended section empty.

I'm not aware of a way to completely remove the Recommended section yet.

Even better would be separate selection toggles for each of Start, Jump Lists (on pinned taskbar items) and File Explorer. I like and frequently use jump lists from the task bar, and have no need of the other two. I've suggested this in feedback hub a while ago, so there is always hope.

Plex Server is Minis Forum UM450. AMD Ryzen5 4500U, 6 Cores, 6 Threads. Passmark Rating = 11039. Running W11 Pro. Also have 2 seldom used laptops: HP Pavilion 11M-AD113DX Laptop (W11 Capable), W10 Home, Dell Inspiron 13-5368 Laptop, W10 Home + Apple mini, circa 2012
I posted about this also, not long after the first developer build... it seems ridiculous to have half the start menu space wasted, but they seem to have no intention of changing it.

*edit* I've also sent a message about it through the feedback hub (which probably went straight to a recycle bin)... but maybe if enough send feedback they will improve it at some point.

This is still an issue with the release and I agree it is annoying.

I wonder which future numbered version of Windows will allow zero customization to 'their' computers.

Agreed. That space could be put to much better use by allowing the pinning of more apps, at least that would be my personal preference. Maybe in the 22H1 release :).

Works in Win 10 and Win 11 (on Windows 11, you'll need to create the "Explorer" key first)

Go to this location in registry... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
Create a new 32-Bit DWORD value DisableSearchBoxSuggestions
Set it's value to 1.

Source: Turn On or Off Search online and include web results in Windows 10

Maybe a bit longer than that as W11 only has annual features, so it would be 22H2.

From feedback hub to remove the crappy recommended section.

It is no wonder people perceive MS just does not listen!
