Many of you will remember the lengthy thread several months ago about the thousands of empty TMP folders Windows is creating and how we all fixed it.

It seems 22H2 has once again enabled the task that is creating these empty folders. I caught mine before very many folders were created. Many of you remember the extensive thread that dealt with this some time ago and how it was resolved. Here's the fix again. It should work until Windows changes versions.

Open task scheduler- In search box type task and select task scheduler from search results.
In Task Scheduler disable \Microsoft\Windows\Management\Provisioning\
Logon (at logon of any user)

Then delete the empty folders in \Windows\System32\Config\SystemProfile\AppData\Local folder. All the folders name starts with TW and have a file extension of .tmp.

(Note) You have to be viewing hidden files to see these folders.

View hidden files and folders in Windows
1. Open file explorer
2. click view on toolbar
3. select show
4. tick file name extensions and also tick hidden items

IMO this ought to be a sticky thread because it seems MS is not going to deal with this problem.

Just disabled Provisioning.

And just FYI... it seems they turned this back ON as well...

I just disabled both items in Task Manager... again.
(however, even though my comp is capable, I didn't get "offered" the 22H2 upgrade... I did it with In-Place upgrade).

Seems System Restore on the C:\ drive was also turned back ON.
(although it may have been REVO turning on System Restore, when I removed two more Windows Apps)

As Ghot lights up his torch, to go after the "monster"... I have to agree with @glasskuter, we need an FYI sticky for things that keep getting: "turned back ON"

Thanks @Ghot. I hadn't checked system restore. This time I turned if off in group policy. We'll see if MS decides to override me on that in the future.
I didn't know about the devicecensus.exe thing, but I can't find devicecensus.exe running in task manager..

I think it only runs at logon.

Ok, time for me to make a fresh backup, now that things are "turned off" again. :-)

Jupiter...
Ok, that's done, now I have to check the sky... to see if I can see Jupiter and it's moons, again.
I got clear skies... now I just need to wait for it to come over the hills. :D

Any1 in the northern hemisphere should be able to see it, if they have clear skies.
You can type in your city and country here... to find where it will be.. when.

Then just scroll down and click on: "Jupiter rise and set in <city>"
And by hovering your mouse over the planet, you can drag it through the night, for details.

I looked for this condition of three of my Dell PC's (2 desktops and one lappy) and found many .tmp files. On one there were 2,900 of them! However when I looked on my Alienware R11 there were NO .tmp files and the task has never been run. What to make of that, any ideas?

All this was news to me and I've disabled the Provisioning task and deleted thousands of empty tw*.tmp files in both Win 11 and Win 10. Both systems very recently imaged, just in case!

Just rebooted and dozens of new tw*.tmp files have been created. The Provisioning task is still disabled so looks like the cause is elsewhere. Still on 21H2.

Sometimes you have to disable ALL the tasks in the Provisioning section, including Cellular.

This is a Win 10 pic, but same difference...

Incompatible device, upgraded to Win 11
I have converted two laptops to Win 11 Pro 22H2 recently. System Restore remained off in both. I found 49 TW*.TMP files in one and 178 in the other. I appear to have gotten away easy with these. However, my desktop (21H2) had 21,300 of these files.

Not sure how to deal with DeviceCensus.exe. Can someone help me here.

So far, I have 412 tmp folders and here's how much space they are taking up. Oddly enough, they don't appear to be taking up any space at all. Windows 11 Pro is functioning normally. I wonder why these were even created. I'm not going to delete something I don't understand. I'm going to leave everything as it is and see what happens. I can always do another W11 Pro clean install.

System restore was a version of ccleaner. Update that then turn it off.

As for the temp files, I think you can expect this every major release. I check it each one and disable it via Windows system tools autorun64. Did this as soon as it showed up. I should automate this with a powershell command, and add it to my weekly scheduled maintenance task. Will post a function to do it when I get a chance.

IMO this ought to be a sticky thread because it seems MS is not going to deal with this problem.
Good post, I had 48 of those and got rid of them all. Also disabled @Ghot 's suggestion for the DeviceCensus task
No new event errors, no kernel problem reports, no issues.
Thanks
Frank

No.
I didn't worry about the tw.... provisioning folders, but they just kept piling up.
When I did delete them, there was like 3000 of them.

Even at 0 bytes... just the names had to be taking up some space.

I guess it's like dust in the house.
Doesn't really hurt anything, but after a while, it's probably a good idea to get rid of it.

@TraderGary If you choose to keep them it doesn't hurt anything. Deleting them and keeping them from coming back is just a means for OCD people like me who are sticklers for file/folder maintenance. I hate junk files. My closet may be messy and disorganized, but my computer is not.
