If I choose to have contraband on my computer I should be allowed without MS slapping my wrist.

No. Absolutely no.

You should never be allowed to use contraband software. In addition, you should never be allowed to be a member on these forums, as per point #4 in forums rules:

  • 4. No piracy or discussion of piracy allowed at all. Such as software, music, videos and other intellectual property violations (e.g. downloading youtube videos locally etc) - it is forum policy that no help shall be given to people who knowingly steal software or services.

That's pretty cool.
Back in the day when progress bars were bars, and Start Menus were real...
I opened Firefox and googled: elevenforum.com - no luck.
Must be bad connection. :D

You Vista lovers may not have had problems with it, but man, it was as slow as a slug.
Too resource intensive for computers of its time.

I built a new PC (CPU, MB, RAM, GPU) around Vista so it ran extremely well for me. No issues with Vista here (y)

No. Absolutely no.

You should never be allowed to use contraband software.

I understand this is your personal opinion about pirated software, but it's slightly off the mark here. The real issue is whether Microsoft or any other OS vendor has the right to police Digital Rights Management for other software vendors. This is a topic that has been brought up after MS made public Windows 11's TPM requirement, as TPM would theoretically make it easier for MS to do just that.

If the cracked files are harmless from a security standpoint, Microsoft should have no right to prevent their usage, no matter how immoral it may be. Things have come a long way since early personal computers, but taking away people's right to keep whatever personal files they choose on their computers would've been scandalous back then. I imagine there's a lot of pressure applied on Microsoft by software vendors, so that MS would tighten the noose and limit those troublesome user rights that often stand in the way of bigger profits. Many things that we have taken for granted in a Windows enviroment have already been deprecated for the sake of cost efficiency. If these practices are widely accepted, there will be no end to them. Rights are so easy to trade for "security" and placated moral sensibilities, but most probably aren't aware that consumer rights are neither a given, or a positive thing for commercial players.

This is a matter for this forum and has nothing to do with Microsoft, we state clearly that we do not support theft of others intellectual property, in any form. A member admitted to using cracks so was in breach of our rules and was treated according to those rules and the incident is now closed

Hi there

People using Pirated software have absolutely no right to make any comments whatsover about Windows and really should be expelled from any discussions at all. Forum rules are 100% clear on this too.

Usually if computers don't work it's often the USERS fault - rarely do computers fail - at least that's been my experience with all sorts of hardware for many years. Failure can occur if the hardware is not "man enough for the job" - as was the case with VISTA - too many people tried it without sufficient hardware - but with appropriate hardware it worked OK. I hated W8 -- not because the OS failed but I didn't see a computer as a Mobile phone with a big screen - not having decent cascadable menus and having to endlessly scroll horizontally to get to an application was just bonkers on a computer --fine for touch screen mobile phones. Windows 8.1 was better and W10 better still. W11 is fine on even quite limited hardware too.

For all these people (especially "Newbies" with only 1 post or very few) to rubbish Windows without giving decent chapter and verse IMO should be treated like trolls and ignored. Windows works on the whole well for what it is -- there are other OS'es as well that work perfectly well too.

If Windows were really all that bad and hopeless to use - why would most of the worlds computers have ever used it -- there have been alternatives around ever since the days of the "Initial PC", some good like OS/2, and Linux but Windows has usually survived. OK it can be better but just think of the absolutely huge range of hardware, software and even competance of the users who use Windows every day without mega problems.

Cheers
jimbo

Interesting.. you condone theft? By stealing things like software you're taking money out of the pockets of the companies and it's employees,, is that fair to them? It's not.. far from it. They all work hard to produce a product and expect to be fairly compensated for their efforts like you or anyone would. When I program I have a choice to make my work available for free or to charge for it and when I charge for it I expect to be paid and not to have anyone steel it.

I think you need to sit back and check your moral compass. It's not about MS it's now about what you do.

Good. What really burns me is that people think it's ok to steel others work. I know that I spent years studying and mastering my craft and I didn't do it so others could steel my work.. no. I also spent lots of money paying for under grand and grad education and I had to work to get that education.

In the end I expect to be compensated for my efforts and I bet they would feel the same when it comes to the work they do everyday, that's assuming they work or have worked. Yes,, I do hand out code for free and help others solve problems with their code but I decide when and where to do that.

The end for now.. I need some cat time. 🐱

This gets sometimes into a grey area -- downright piracy -- Wrong, etc etc. However when it comes to "reverse Engineering" - so long as patent rights etc are respected it's not at all black and white. Say somebody comes out with a great product -- howver at a rediculously high price -- is it wrong for somebody else to provide a similar service at a cheaper price -- subject to the provison that patent and other rights are respected. Where competition starts and "Stealing" stops is not always 100% clear -- anyway nice debate for the weekend.

Nothing else to say on this other than overt piracy is definitely wrong and not comdoned by Forum members of any serious standing.

Cheers

After reading a lot of this thread I can only offer that we don't buy the software, only the license to use it and the media it is stored on or the downloaded file. Running the software without complying with the licensing requirements/restrictions runs afoul of the legal issues, my first experience in that was with Shareware back in the '90s, pay for it or uninstall it. I use Windows and Linux [used to have a Mac] and if I wanted more experimentation Linux is Open Source and could modify as I desired, create my own version.
