Win Update KB5010795 Out of Band Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Build 22000.438 - Jan. 17

  • Staff
UPDATE 1/25:

January 17, 2022 - KB5010795 (OS Build 22000.438) Out-of-band

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types. For an overview of Windows 11 (original release), see its update history page.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Highlights

  • Updates a known issue that affects VPN connections.

Improvements and fixes

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:
  • Addresses a known issue that might cause IP Security (IPSEC) connections that contain a Vendor ID to fail. VPN connections using Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) or IP security Internet Key Exchange (IPSEC IKE) might also be affected.
  • Addresses an issue that might prevent removable media that is formatted using the Resilient File System (ReFS) from mounting or might cause the removable media to mount in the RAW file format. This issue occurs after installing the January 11, 2022 Windows update.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update - 22000.345

  • This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
All usersAfter installing Windows 11, some image editing programs might not render colors correctly on certain high dynamic range (HDR) displays. This is frequently observed with white colors, which could display in bright yellow or other colors.
This issue occurs when certain color-rendering Win32 APIs return unexpected information or errors under specific conditions. Not all color profile management programs are affected, and color profile options available in the Windows 11 Settings page, including Microsoft Color Control Panel, are expected to function correctly.
We are working on a resolution and estimate a solution will be available in late January.

How to get this update

Before installing this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

Release ChannelAvailableNext Step
Windows Update or Microsoft UpdateYesGo to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you’ll find the link to download and install the update.
Windows Update for BusinessNoNone. These changes will be included in the next security update to this channel.
Microsoft Update CatalogYesTo get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)NoYou can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5010795.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU - version 22000.345.

.466 was an Insider patch. That's a different channel.
This is a regular channel patch.
The folks in the regular channel, don't get offered the Insider channel patches.

In the Windows 11 News sub-forum...
The Insider channel patches have a BLUE icon.
The regular channel patches have a PURPLE icon.

The same color scheme is used on Ten Forums in the Windows 10 News sub-forum.

A bit unexpected and unscheduled, it was waiting in Windows Update section of Settings for my approval to download and install, but without common notification; I might have found it much later without news in this article. Thanks!

A bit unexpected and unscheduled....
Yes, 'unexpected/unscheduled' is exactly what Microsoft mean by calling it 'out of band'. These out of band updates only occur when there's an urgent bug fix that MS want to make available as soon as possible. In this case the fix is for VPN IPSEC issues. Apart from that there is nothing new in this CU, and as that issue doesn't affect me I do not intend to install it.

There is an equivalent out of band update for Windows 10 to fix the same issue.

Scheduled updates are the 'B' release on Patch Tuesday, and the 'C/D' optional releases that may be issued in the 3rd or 4th week of the month. More here:

44 Windows editions! You definitely have been busy.
Not really. I wrote a program that automates the process. I spend about two minutes feeding info to the program, then it goes about doing all for me :)

Gotta love automation.

Interesting. I tried several times yesterday to get a USB drive (that I use in the car) to even register that it had been inserted into the PC. Nothing worked. It didn't even show in the disk management console.

Spotted this update and installed it and now that drive does show correctly.

Not only that, but it is also an Insider build. It is currently only offered to those signed up for the Insider programme, retail users won't be offered it. In due course, once it has finished being tested in the Release Preview ring, it is likely to be released as an 'optional preview update' for the rest of us.
