tl;dr: In action center, the toggle to enable / disable Night Light does not work anymore. Same for the toggle in Windows settings.

background: I do IT support for a global company based out of Hong Kong, and thus I am up early most days - usually around 4 AM Eastern US time. At that time the Night Light is still usually on for my system ,as I have it set to automatically enable and disable with sunset and sunrise. It worked perfectly fine yesterday, before I had installed KB5012643. Before I went to bed, I manually installed the update via the .msu file form Microsoft Update Catalog. This morning, when I woke up, I am unable to use the toggle in Action Center or the Turn on now button in Windows Settings.

I've installed KB5012643 and so far don't see a problem. I used the Turn on now button, toggled Schedule night light on and off, changed from Sunset to Sunrise to Set hours, messed around with everything, and can't see anything wrong. When I finished, I was able to put everything back like it was before I started.

Since there are no computers in my bedroom, and I turn my system off at night, I don't have a use for Night Light. So, I don't know all that much about it.

I have no such problem on my systems listed in my specs below. But as Night Light is very much tied in with what graphics driver you use, them I'm not surprised that it works for some and not for others.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

@johnlgalt,

I just now installed the KB5012643 update and Night Light is working under both Action Center and Windows settings for me.

Windows 11 Pro 21H2 (Build 22000.652) here as well.

Yeah, I'm not surprised that it only affects me and is not happening to everyone. But, FWIW, this thing would not install via WU at all, so I had to manually install it. WU kept throwing up a 0x800701a1 error when attempting to install.

It could be anything, really, but if I need to I may contact them for some help so they can analyze my use case and system and see if they find something that might be a specific contributing factor.

Not AMD bashing but once again, I notice Ryzen systems having all sorts of weird issues with 11.

Again, not Ryzen/AMD bashing just pointing out some trends. And yes, Intel is not immune to issues either.

I won't take that as bashing at all - because it's the gods awful truth. AGESA 1.2.0.6c provided all sorts of issues, including fTPM causing stuttering in systems, though I'm now on a beta UEFI fw build with AGESA 1.2.0.7 that seems to be perfectly fine now (of course, I'm also not using the fTPM anymore, so ...). and that is just one tiny example (which I ran into myself). But it does seem like AMD platforms are facing more issues than they typically should be expected to.

Yeah, that kind of sucks and it isn't doing AMD or Microsoft any good as both camps can end up losing customers - MS on 11, AMD on Ryzen.

Also read issue with gaming between 11 and AMD (Ryzen). Hopefully they get it all sorted out.

don't know what has happened to this update KB5012643. ... it disappeared and checking for updates does not bring it back, any ideas?
Well "if" it was pulled it was done after I did the update....
My System One was offered (and I installed) the optional KB5012643 update. I have just run up its Macrium image from before that as a VM using viBoot. That same install of W11 is no longer being offered any optional update. Look like MS have indeed put a block on offering it through window update.

Thanks for Info Bree, I have an image before the update, but I presume it's best to leave it installed as everything seems to be working fine, do you think that is the best plan?

I have had no issues apart from the Safe Mode one, and MS have fixed that now. I'm keeping it installed. It will all get updated in 6 days anyway, it's Patch Tuesday on the 10th.
