I had previously posted a thread regarding KB5016629 which was released on 8/9/2022 and the issue that I am having has been the same for all the releases that came after KB5015882 which was released on 7/21/2022. KB5016629, KB5016691 & KB5017383 appear to contain some code that is causing installation failure on some machines but not all. These are all cumulative updates and regardless of how you try to install them whether through standalone installer, windows update or even doing a complete install where the update is included the installation fails. I stripped my machine to bare bones and removed all unnecessary hardware and peripherals and it didn't make a bit of difference. I am convinced there's something unique that MS has added that is causing this failure. The installation goes to 30% and the computer reboots and then hangs on with the spinning dots forever. You have to force shutdown and let the auto repair remove all changes. It's really annoying because I have wasted countless hours and I am still where I was a month ago. Does MS even know that there's an issue?

Have you tried to download from the Windows Catalog? Sometimes getting the standalone package works for me.

FWIW I recently had trouble with the same updates you mention. Tried all of the recommendations and then some. The only thing that worked in my situation was to restore an older db that I knew was currently up to date and reliable when I made it. KB5016629 then installed completely and flawlwlessly. Verifired all of my applications would funciton and update as required. then made a new database BU. But somewhere along the way I had apparanetly unknowingly tweaked this working DB such that is was missing something necessary for the future updates. Could have been something I did using REVO or CCleaner portable. Not sure yet.

Yesterday update (KB5017383) was failing to install. Reviewed my .Net settings and .net 4 was missing. Hmm. I use Visual Studio and updated it because occasionally it seems to can modify some aspects of .net. Anyway after VS update .Net was back and in tact, Tried to install (KB5011783) but it failed again. I had previously also used (REVO and CCleaner again) So I reloaded the same older known reliable Database BU. Attempted to install (KB5017383) and it worked, All apps function correctly.
Went through and updated to current state ALL of my software. then tested it all to verify it all worked correctly. Then I made another GOOD up to date database BU. I use paid Macrium Home and do full backups.
I do not know what is going on yet. Still looking for definite answer.

I've been current with all the .NET updates and apply all the updates that are automatically pushed to the machine. I too have made multiple backups at different times with Macrium so I can revert back when things go south. For some odd reason this issue started with KB5016629, so then I looked at the one right before it which was KB5015882 and gave that a shot and it installed without a hitch. No changes in hardware and software so I don't know what else could be causing this issue. May be something in the registry is always a possibility but how do you even begin to troubleshoot that. I tried numerous things to no avail. Now I am hoping that when 22H2 final comes out it will resolve this problem. But not holding my breath. Usually when there's a hang up during boot it has to do with drivers but which software driver is causing this anomaly is anyone's guess. The Update Troubleshooter is garbage because you would think it would fix or at least point to the cause.

It is available on Catalog and is dated 9/21/2022. I tried that stand alone installer and had the same exact issue.

Any one else having issues with cumulative updates released after 7/21/2022? I've tried everything including doing a full install of the new 22H2 and I get the same stupid spinning wheel after the boot during the upgrade. The upgrade never completes and I have to revert back. This all began with KB5016629 in my case and whatever MS added is screwing things up. I can't be the only one with this issue. My System is a Gigabyte Z390 UD Rev 1.1 with F10 Bios. The fact that this only started to happen lately suggests that all drivers & software were fine with prior updates. I uninstalled MB and even did a clean boot prior to running th updates and still the same nonsense with the spinning wheel after partial upgrade (i.e. 30%). Why does this only happen with some machines and not all and is there logical way to isolate which potential driver might be the culprit?

Probably the best thing to do when having continuing problems is a clean install, wipe everything from the drive and start over. Just be sure you have a copy of your files, anything that exists nowhere else, on a different storage device first. I use the MCT/Media Creation Tool from Microsoft to get both the .iso file used to create the install DVD+R/DL disc and the bootable 8GB USB Thumb drive.

That's the nuclear option and trying to avoid that at all cost if I can since I would have to reinstall so many applications from scratch. Far too many people are having issues with updates lately so there's something buggy in their code. When I first encountered this issue with KB5016629, I went back to KB5015882 and that went in fine with no issues which leads me to believe my hardware and drivers are all good. All the other updates like .NET are installing fine and it's just these Cum updates that are causing issues during installation.

It is a pain to have to reinstall programs but I always keep in mind that maybe one of those programs started the issues and it may come back.

The problem is you don't want to have to go through this every time MS releases some update. I have hidden some of the updates and will wait till they fix this issue. I am pretty sure my system is not the only one with this issue.

Who knows what was done to a system in that year of use? Some make modifications to their operating system. You may even have malware that you aren't aware of.

No malware since I have done scans with MB & Defender. Like I said KB5015882 went in without a problem and it's just the updates that they came out after that which is having installation issues. It does 30% update and restarts and then the spinning dots forever.
